ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GLIAC announced their All-Conference awards for women's lacrosse, and GVSU had the most players represented on the teams, while also bringing home five the major awards.
The Lakers placed 11 players on the all-conference squads, garnering seven on the First-Team, two on the Second-Team, and two more were honorable mention. Additionally, they earned five of the player or coach of the year awards.
Maddy Champagne was the Attacker of the Year,
Sydney Stone earned Midfielder of the Year,
Aislynn Alkire was named Defender of the Year,
Kaylyn Cater Goalkeeper of the Year, and head coach Mackenzie Lawler was the league's Coach of the Year.
For the second straight season, GVSU senior
Maddy Champagne has been named GLIAC Attacker of the Year. Champagne leads the Lakers with 56 points on 43 goals and 13 assists, notching nine hat tricks this year. She has added 50 draw controls, 40 groundballs, and caused 17 turnovers. Her 43 goals ranks second in the league, and the 56 points puts her third amongst conference players. Earning her third First-Team All-GLIAC accolades, Champagne became the Lakers all-time leading scorer this year, reaching 226 for her career.
Sydney Stone has put up a career-high 46 points en route to earning GLIAC Midfielder of the Year honors. The senior tied for the team lead with 43 goals, recording 10 hat tricks this season. She added a team-leading 53 draw controls, 38 groundballs, and caused a team-high 27 turnovers. Stone has played a vital role in both the Laker offense that is scoring over 13 goals per game, and the defense that causes over 10 turnovers per contest. She is tied for second in the league in goals and ranks sixth in points, and is earning her the third All-GLIAC honor of her career.
Senior defender
Aislynn Alkire rounds out her Laker career by being named the GLIAC Defender of the Year. A big part of the nation's best defense, Alkire has forced 22 turnovers and picked up 33 groundballs on the Laker backline. GVSU has yet to allow double-digit goals this season and has held their opponents to less than five goals 12 times this season. Now a three-time All-GLIAC honoree, Alkire ranks in the top-ten league-wide in both caused turnovers and groundballs.
After a dominant season in net, junior goalkeeper
Kaylyn Cater has been named GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year. The netminder ranks third in the nation with a .543 save percentage and leads the country allowing just 4.51 goals per game. She picked up 70 saves and 12 groundballs, notching 13 wins for the Lakers. She has eight games with five or more saves and picked up her 100
th career save earlier this season.
Head coach Mackenzie Lawler had guided the Lakers to a perfect 6-0 GLIAC record, as they claimed yet another regular season conference title. This season, the Lakers are 15-1 and have been ranked in the IWLCA national poll every week. 11 players earned All-GLIAC honors this year, including the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year, Midfielder of the Year, Defender of the Year, and Goalkeeper of the Year. Under her coaching, the Lakers have the nation's best scoring defense, allowing just 4.63 goals per game.
Joining Champagne, Stone, Alkire, and Cater on the first team were attacker
Hailey Crittenden, midfielder
Ashleigh Rothe, and defender
Hope Leinen. Crittenden put together the best season of her career, scoring a career-high 35 goals, notching 42 total points. She tallied six hat tricks, including a career-high six in a win at UIndy, while adding 21 groundballs and caused 14 turnovers. Rothe had 26 points on 17 goals and seven assists, with 45 draw controls, 33 groundballs, and causing 23 turnovers. She totaled four hat tricks during the season. On the backline, Leinen was a key cog in the Laker defense. She had 20 groundballs and caused eight turnovers and earned one GLIAC Player of the Week honor.
On the second team for the Lakers were freshman attacker
Delaney Smith and sophomore defender
Kylie Waeghe. Smith was third on the team in points, tallying 21 goals and a team-high 24 assists. She had two hat tricks, adding 17 groundballs and 17 draw controls. Waeghe picked up 22 groundballs and caused 17 turnovers. She was a major part of the Laker defense that held GLIAC opponents to just 3.33 goals per game.
Earning honorable mention accolades were midfielder
Zoe Ziegler and defender
Elora Ferrie. This is the first All-GLIAC honor for both players. Ziegler had four mulit-goal games, culminating with 13 on the year and 18 total points. Senior
Elora Ferrie caused 15 turnovers and grabbed 13 groundballs on the Laker backline.
