ALLENDALE, MICH. – After opening GLIAC play last weekend, the GVSU women's lacrosse team plays their final nonconference game of the year on Friday, before getting back in league action on Sunday. The Lakers play host to Walsh on Friday evening, then heading back on the road to travel to Davenport on Sunday afternoon.

The eighth ranked Lakers extended their winning streak up to six games last weekend, as they began GLIAC play with two convincing wins. They went on the road and took down Northern Michigan 17-6, then followed that up with a 16-1 win at Concordia-St. Paul. With those two wins, the Lakers won their 30
th and 31
st straight GLIAC regular season games, setting a new conference record.
In the victory over the Wildcats,
Maddy Champagne scored five times, putting her over 200 points for her career, while
Hailey Crittenden scored four times.
Kaylyn Cater made six saves in the cage, and the Laker defense held the GLIAC's leading scorer to just one point. On Sunday, the defense once again dominated, allowing just four shots, and caused 16 turnovers. Crittenden scored five more times, with Champagne and
Sydney Stone both had hat tricks. Crittenden was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week, and
Aislynn Alkire was the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
Entering Friday's game on a three-game winning streak, Walsh is 8-4 this year. The Cavaliers have scored 166 times this year, with 110 of them being assisted. They have two players already at 60 points on the year, Rachel Black (35 goals, 25 assists) and Isabella Kelty (19 goals, 41 assists). Two other players have scored over 20 goals to help pace the balanced scoring attack. Their defense has caused 124 turnovers and picked up 214 groundballs and they are allowing fewer than nine goals a game. In net, Kathleen Mendenhall has gotten the bulk of the time as goalkeeper, recording 51 saves and a .443 save percentage. This is the second consecutive year the Lakers and Cavaliers have matched up, as GVSU won last year 16-5.
The Lakers get back to conference play on Sunday, when they stay in the 616, traveling to Davenport. After starting 5-2, the Panthers have lost three straight contests. In their opening weekend of league play, they fell 18-15 to CSP, then 18-7 at Northern. Maisy Latus has held her own in the cage, putting together a .461 save percentage and 106 saves, playing every minute of action this year. On the offensive side, Maddy Haynes leads the way with 31 goals and 38 points, while Blakely Malpass has totaled 34 points this year. The Panthers were projected last in the preseason standings after they went 2-15 last year. In their three matchups, the Lakers outscored them 66-17, beating them twice in the regular season and then once again in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals.
