Box Score KANSAS CITY, MO. – For the second consecutive game, the GVSU women's lacrosse team dominated from start to finish, this time taking down Rockhurst 17-4. The Lakers scored the first 14 goals of the game, cruising to the win and a 6-1 start to the year.
The Lakers began the game with four goals in the first quarter.
Delaney Smith and
Maddy Champagne both had free position attempt goals, followed by
Sydney Stone scoring, which was the 100
th goal of her career. Then Champagne added another with an assist from Smith to close out the first with the Lakers leading 4-0.
They scored seven more in the second quarter and shut out the Hawks for the first 30 minutes of the game. Stone scored her second goal of the day to begin the scoring run.
Ella Boose followed that with a goal, then
Hailey Crittenden had her first of the day, both off free position attempt shots.
Ainsley Shilling got an assist from
Ashleigh Rothe to make it 8-0. The final three goals were scored by Champagne, Stone, and
Zoe Ziegler, as GVSU led 11-0 at the half.
Jillian Bingman opened the scoring in the second half with her first goal of the game, getting an assist from Rothe. Smith then struck again, getting a pass from Stone to record the goal, followed up by another score from Ziegler, this one off an assist from Shilling. The Hawks got their first goal of the day right before the end of the quarter, trailing 14-1 after three quarters of play.
Shilling and Stone both scored once more as play resumed in the final period, as
Kate DeYoung and
Hailey Crittenden recorded assists. Rockhurst got two straight goals after that, but
Leah Leonard got one back with her first goal of the day, this one off an assist from DeYoung. Rockhurst scored once more, but still fell by 13 goals.
Sydney Stone had four goals and one assist to lead the way offensively.
Maddy Champagne had a hat trick, while
Ainsley Shilling,
Delaney Smith, and
Zoe Ziegler all scored twice.
Ella Boose,
Jillian Bingman,
Hailey Crittenden, and
Leah Leonard all had one goal each.
Kate DeYoung, Smith, and
Ashleigh Rothe all had two assists, with Crittenden both adding one.
The Lakers only allowed nine shots all afternoon, as they forced 16 turnovers and picked up 16 groundballs.
Aislynn Alkire and Champagne both grabbed three groundballs, and
Kylie Waeghe and Stone each had two. Alkire, Rothe, and
Hope Leinen all caused two turnovers each.
