Lakers Close Regular Season at NMU and MTU

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team travels to the Upper Peninsula for the final weekend of the regular season. The Lakers will travel to Marquette on Thursday (Feb. 29) to face Northern Michigan before ending the regular season in Houghton, Michigan to take on Michigan Tech.

The Lakers travel to the U.P. after two big home wins last weekend against Ferris State and Lake Superior State. GVSU defeated Ferris State 87-77 before defeating Lake Superior State 93-75 in the last game. The Lakers are now 9-7 in the GLIAC and 12-14 overall. GVSU sits in fourth place in the GLIAC and have already clinched a playoff berth in the GLIAC Tournament that begins next week. 
 
Britain Harris scored a career high 23 points against Ferris State. Harris shot 8-12 from the field and 3-5 from three. Trevon Gunter notched a career high 29 points in the win against Lake Superior State. Gunter shot 9-13 from the field, knocking down five 3-pointers, and went a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Mason Docks was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week last week. Docks notched a career high seven rebounds against Ferris State including three offensive rebounds. He swiped two steals in both wins and added three rebounds against Lake Superior State.
 
Ethan Alderink leads the Lakers in scoring on the season averaging 12.1 points per game shooting 47.5% from the field. Alderink has scored in double figures in 15 of the last 17 games. William Dunn has scored 11.1 points a game and leads the team in three-point shooting. Dunn has 46 shots behind the arc while shooting at a 42% clip. He has scored 17 points over the last three consecutive games. Marius Grazulis and Britain Harris have eached notched 10.2 points a game. Grazulis ranks second in the GLIAC grabbing 7.5 rebounds and is shooting 45.8% from the field. Harris leads the team with 27 steals and is shooting 41% from the field.
 
Northern Michigan enters the final weekend of the regular season in first place in the GLIAC with a 13-3 record and 20-8 overall record. The Wildcats are looking to clinch the regular season championship with at least one win this week. NMU is averaging 79.7 points per game and are shooting 48% as a team from the field. 
 
Max Weisbrod leads the Wilcats in scoring averaging 16.9 points per game and is a top candidate for GLIAC player of the year. Weisbrod is shooting 43.5% from the field and leads the team with 106 assists. Dylan Kuehl has notched 16.5 points a game on 50% shooting from the field. Carson Smith is scoring 13.0 points on 50% shooting and has hauled in four rebounds a game. Sam Schultz leads the GLIAC grabbing 9.5 rebounds a contest and has added 9.5 points.
 
Michigan Tech enters the final two games with a 10-15 overall record. The Huskies are in seventh place in the GLIAC standings with a 7-9 mark. MTU is averaging 71 points a contest and are shooting 44.5% as a team from the field. 
 
Michigan Tech is led by Marcus Tomashek who leads the GLIAC in scoring with 22.2 points a game. Tomashek is shooting 44% from the field and 40% from three on the year. Dan Gherezgher has notched 13.9 points and has grabbed 4.7 rebounds a contest. Gherezgher is shooting 46% from the field and 75% from the free throw line. Pete Calcaterrs has added 6.8 points and 6.3 rebounds on the year, while Dawson Nordgaard leads the team shooting 59% from the field averaging eight points.
