GVSU launches the 2024-25 season with Tri-Meet Victory

Grand Rapids, Mich.-  It was the season opener for the GVSU Men's and Women's Swim and Dive team across Grand Rapids at Venema Aquatic Center against Calvin University and Saginaw Valley State. The Lakers snagged two victories over these two teams.

Competing on the men's side, Grand Valley grabbed a huge score of 213 to 85 against Calvin and a score of 188.5 to 108.5 against Saginaw Valley.

Senior Matt Bosch, finished first in the Men's 100 Yard Freestyle  with a time of 43.79. Bosch also broke the pool record at Venema Aquatic Center for this event. He touched the wall at 1:37.22 for first in the 200 Yard Freestyle. 

The GVSU men swam very well today with six other first place finishes.

The Lakers Men's 200 Yard Relay finished first with team members Matt Bosch, Carsyn Christoffel, Esteban Nunez Del Prado, and Evan Scotto Divetta with a time of 1:20.09.

Staying on the men's side, Carter Wood scored a 307.35 in the 1 mtr Dive to place first. This score is a National Qualifying score. Wood scored a 294.10 to finish first in the 3 mtr. Dive.

Head diving coach, Steve Burciaga stated, "This is our first meet of the year and this one is exciting because it kind of tells us where we are at with our practices. I was really excited to see them with their new dives. I talked to the team and told them how proud of them I was but we have some things to get done and I can't wait to get back to work."

On the women's side, they sealed the win with a score of 210 over Calvin's 88. The Lakers also sealed the deal against Saginaw Valley with a score of 228 to their 69.

Junior Sara Alvarez, touched the wall at 1:03.19 in the Women's 100 Yard Breaststroke to take first place. She finished first in the 200 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:18.20 and competing in the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:04.64, Alvarez took first place. 

The GVSU Women's team took first in the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:43.79 and the members in this race were Sara Alvarez, Lucy Hedley, Vittoria Proietti, and Alysa Wager.                                                            

The Lakers women all competed at a very high level and a lot of the members took first place in nine different events.

Diving on the women's side, Maddie Kooistra  scored a huge 254.95 in the 1 mtr. Dive to take first. Kooistra also took first in the 3 mtr. Dive with a score of 253.50

"Great first win of the season for both the mens and the womens. It was a great experience for our freshmen and some of them are right at their best times from high school. Some of our returners are not far off from their best times here today, so it is exciting to see that with how we have trained so far this season. I am excited to see what the next few weekends hold," stated head coach, Andy Boyce.

The Grand Valley State Lakers will head to Indianapolis on Saturday, October 19th for a head to head meet against the University of Indianapolis at 2 p.m.
