ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GLIAC All-Conference awards were announced today by the league in between the two semifinal matchups, and the list was littered with Lakers, as 10 players took home all-conference awards, led by two players winning Player of the Year honors.
For the third consecutive season, senior midfield
Molly Bursinger has been named GLIAC Midfielder of the Year, as well as First-Team All-GLIAC. Bursinger was second in the GLIAC with 52 goals this season, and her 69 points were also second in the league. Bursinger was a key part of one of the best draw control units in the nation, grabbing 98, as the Lakers rank second nationally in draw controls per game. She has scored three or more goals in 12 different games this season, tallying five goals three times, and scored her 100
th career goal earlier this season in the win over Colorado Mesa. Twice this season, Bursinger has been named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week and earned one GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Maddy Champagne was named GLIAC Attacker of the Year and First-Team All-Conference after leading the league with 53 goals and 70 points. She was also second in the conference with 93 draw controls, tying a GVSU single-game record with 13 in the home win over Davenport. On 11 different occasions, Champagne scored three or more goals, scoring a season-high six at Davenport. She was the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week four times, including a stretch of three consecutive weeks during conference play. In the win over Notre Dame College, Champagne became the 11
th player in program history to score 100 career goals.
Joining them on the first team were senior attacker
Maggie Hammer and freshman defender
Kylie Waeghe. Hammer totaled 49 points on 40 goals and nine assists, scoring three or more goals eight times this year, recording five in three games. She also added 17 groundballs and caused eight turnovers and won one GLIAC Player of the Week award. In the GLIAC semifinal win over Davenport, Hammer scored the 100
th goal of her career. Waeghe has been a key defensive piece for the Lakers in her first year in Allendale. She has grabbed 23 groundballs and caused 15 turnovers as part of a Laker defense that has held opponents under five goals six times. She earned her first career GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week award following the team's weekend in Colorado, in which she had 10 groundballs and four caused turnovers.
The Lakers placed four players on the All-GLIAC Second Team, as
Kate DeYoung,
Sydney Stone,
Aislynn Alkire, and
Audrey Maloney all earned the honor. DeYoung tallied 43 points on 30 goals and 13 assists this season in only 13 games. She scored a season-high six goals in the season-opening win over Flagler, which was one of six games in which she recorded a hat trick. Midfielder
Sydney Stone scored 24 goals and had five assists to record 29 points this season. Stone had three hat tricks and added 32 draw controls this year and won GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring seven goals against Colorado Mesa and Regis. Alkire was another important piece in the Laker defense, as she grabbed 19 groundballs and caused eight turnovers, while also nabbing a career-high 13 draw controls. In the cage,
Audrey Maloney had a perfect 3-0 record, as she tallied 28 saves on a .378 save percentage to once again earn All-GLIAC honors.
Rounding out the GLIAC awards for Grand Valley, were attacker
Hailey Crittenden and midfield
Ashleigh Rothe both earning honorable mention honors. Crittenden totaled 24 points on 18 goals and six assists, scoring a hat trick three times. The junior picked up 15 groundballs and caused seven turnovers as well.
Ashleigh Rothe was all over the field for the Lakers, picking up 34 points on 19 goals and 15 assists, while grabbing 47 draw controls, fielding 27 groundballs, and causing 21 turnovers. She earned her first career GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week after recording four groundballs, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers in a win over CSP.
