Lacrosse Heads Out On the Road For Two Contests This Week

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley women's lacrosse team kicks off a busy week with two road games, first heading to Davenport tomorrow and then traveling down to Walsh for a Friday afternoon matchup.
 
The Lakers are on a five-game winning streak entering the week, as they defeated Concordia-St. Paul last Friday 19-5 to move to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Maddy Champagne, Molly Bursinger, and Kate DeYoung all scored four goals in the game, and Ella Boose added a hat trick. Champagne (33 goals), Bursinger (31), and DeYoung (28) rank 3-4-5 in the GLIAC in goals, while Champagne's 13 assists lead the league. The Lakers also have one of the best draw control units in the nation, winning over 63% of their draws, which is tops in the nation and fourth in draw controls per game at 17.58 a contest. GVSU is riding a 26 game GLIAC winning streak, the longest in program history.
 
Davenport comes into Wednesday's game at 2-11 this season and 0-3 in conference play. The Panthers won their previous game after enduring a six-game losing streak before that victory. DU scores the fewest goals per game in the conference at just 9.46 a game and they have given up 12.77 goals per game, which is the most in the conference. Their leading scorer is Blakely Malpass, who has scored 33 times in the 13 games. Maisy Latus has started all 13 games in net this season, saving 152 shots and posting a .478 save percentage. Davenport is winless against the Lakers in program history, going 0-10.
 
Friday's matchup against Walsh will be between two of the hottest teams in the country, as the Cavaliers are on a nine-game winning streak after they dropped two games to open the season and are currently sitting at 9-2 this season. Walsh has the best scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 6.09 goals a contest, led by their goalies 0.568 save percentage, which ranks second nationally. The Cavaliers have split time in the cage between Rebekah Bargeron and Kathleen Mendenhall, with Mendenhall having 54 saves, while Bargeron has a .611 save percentage. Two Cavaliers have over 40 points this season, led by Isabella Kelty's 46 followed then by Chloe Tatlow's 41. This will be the seventh time these two programs have played each other, with GVSU leading the series 6-0.
