ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's tennis team completed the ITA Regional Championships last weekend in Allendale.
Freshman
Stephen Claassen claimed the singles Flight C championship going 5-0 and winning the final match in a thrilling three-set tiebreaker. Senior
Sean Miller won his first four matches to advance to the single Flight A semifinals before falling in a tough three-set match. Senior
Freddy Cossio won his first three matches advancing to the quarterfinals of the singles Flight B bracket. Sophomore
Denys Zamaraiev won the singles Flight A consolation bracket after winning five consecutive matches. Zamaraiev claimed the final match in a third set tiebreaker.
On the doubles side,
Freddy Cossio and
Lucas Gonzalez went 2-1 advancing to the quarterfinals in the doubles Flight A bracket.
Victor Lopes and
Chimo Minguez posted a 4-1 record with a runner-up finish in the doubles Flight B bracket.
Denys Zamaraiev and
Stephen Claassen tallied a 3-1 record finishing as runner-ups in the doubles Flight C bracket.
The Lakers will return to the courts this Friday (Oct. 6) for their first dual match of the season. GVSU will host Aquinas at 12:00 PM before hosting Cornerstone at 5:00 PM.
