The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) named its Division II women's lacrosse All-Americans this week, which included three Grand Valley State Lakers. Seniors Leigha Johnson and Sophie Conroy and junior Molly Bursinger were recognized amongst the top players in the nation as IWLCA All-Americans.
Junior Molly Bursinger was named to the IWLCA All-American First Team. Bursinger also received USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American Third Team honors, GLIAC Midfielder of the Year honors, First Team All-GLIAC honors, and IWLCA First Team All-Region honors this season. The Laker junior has scored 50 goals, dished out 22 assists, caused 25 turnovers, and has won a GVSU program-high 124 draw controls this year. Bursinger has scored five goals or more four times and has won five or more draw controls 13 times this season. Bursinger was also named GLIAC Player of the Week on three separate occasions this season and IWLCA National Player of the Week.
Senior attacker Sophie Conroy was named to the IWLCA All-American Second Team. Conroy adds this to the list of honors she's earned this year, as she has also been named a USA Lacrosse Magazine Second Team All-American, GLIAC Attacker of the Year, First Team All-GLIAC, and IWLCA First Team All-Region. Conroy led the Lakers this season with 67 goals, recording 149 goals and 220 points in her career at GVSU. The senior offensive standout scored three or more goals 12 times this season, while scoring four or more goals eight times. Conroy also earned GLIAC Player of the Week honors and IWLCA National Player of the Week honors.
Senior defender Leigha Johnson was named to the IWLCA All-American First Team. Earlier this season, Johnson was also named as a USA Lacrosse Magazine First Team All-American, GLIAC Defender of the Year, First Team All-GLIAC, and IWLCA First Team All-Region, and has been a key component of the 2022 GVSU defense. Johnson has grabbed 17 ground balls and caused ten turnovers, while also earning back-to-back GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. The Lakers defense has limited opponents to an average of 6.2 goals per game and just 16.6 shots per game, including the Lakers' 24-0 shutout in a win over Upper Iowa this season.
