5th Year Seniors

Conroy and Esposito Return For One More Season

The two midfielders use fifth year of eligibility to stay with the program

08.05.2021

Four-year Lakers Sophie Conroy and Olivia Esposito are returning to the women's lacrosse program for their fifth year of eligibility after losing their 2020 season due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Head women's lacrosse coach Mackenzie Lawler is looking forward to the return of the two leaders.

"I can't measure the benefit Sophie and Olivia will bring to our team this season as they return for their fifth year of eligibility," said Lawler. "Both players are returning captains and know what it will take for our program to compete on a national level. They have had historic careers on the field and will both play a huge role in our offense this year. Our program is beyond lucky to have them on campus for another year."

The pair of midfielders return after winning the GLIAC championship last season and are eager to lead the team to another successful campaign.

"Our team successes this year were something to be very proud of," said Conroy. "From the amount of individual and team awards, wins, and growth that the program gained was very rewarding. I knew that senior year was not going to be the ideal year with the unknown of how our season would turn out, and I wanted to make sure I left everything out on the field before hanging up the cleats. I am more than excited to be back for my fifth year for some unfinished business. I am very confident in our strong group of leaders we have coming back and excited for new talent to join us as well. This year is our year to make it into the tournament and be a top-four team in this division. We have all the tools we need and I can't wait to get back on campus, be with the best teammates, and start putting in the work to get that ring. "

Conroy earned First Team All-GLIAC honors after scoring a career-best 61 points last season. The starter and two-year captain for the Lakers also entered the 100-point career mark and now ranks tenth in program history with 128 points for her career.

"Sophie made the transition to low attack last season and her leadership and experience will help our younger talented players learn from her success," said Lawler.

Esposito earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors while netting a career-best 31 goals and controlling 29 draws as a senior.

"I am super excited to play my last season with these girls because of how much potential we have," said Esposito. "After a long and crazy year, we proved that we can still pull out a conference championship! I'm excited for what we will accomplish next in the upcoming season."

"Olivia is a consistent force in the midfield and her return will create the most depth we have ever had in the position to allow for a new style of play," Lawler said.
