Boerger begins her second season with the Lakers

01.24.2020

Grand Valley State assistant lacrosse coach, Nora Boerger, has been named the head coach of the Swiss Women's National Team.  Boerger is in her second year with the Laker women's lacrosse program and helped lead the team to an overall record of 14 wins and four losses in 2019.

"I would like to thank Swiss Lacrosse for the opportunity to be the next women's head coach for the Swiss National Team," said Boerger.  "I'm very excited and humbled to continue the development of lacrosse in Switzerland."

Last summer, Boerger was the associate head coach of the Swiss national team during the 2019 Women's European Lacrosse Championships in Israel.  In her role with the Swiss national team, she worked exclusively with the defense and helped lead the team to capture their first ever win over Italy.

The Swiss National Team topped Spain, 11-3, in last year's opening round of the European Championships, but fell short to Norway and Austria in the semi-finals and eleventh-position match.

"I had a great experience as the Associate Head Coach competing in the European Championships and look forward to grow the program for the future.  Hopp Schwizz (Go Swiss)."

Boerger will prepare the team for the 2021 World Cup, which takes place in Maryland at Towson University.  This will mark the 11th World Cup in women's lacrosse history and the second time the team has competed in the tournament.  The team is represented by players from Switzerland, Germany, Nigeria and Turkey.  As a member of the national team, all players hold full-time jobs as well, including careers in engineering, financial advising, psychology and teaching.

Just recently, a youth program was developed in the country, therefore most active players begin their playing career in their late teens or early twenties.  Since the national language is German, Boerger has picked up on some words to use while coaching or in casual conversation, although all players can speak English.

The national team was created in 2012 and has competed in three European Championships.
