CALEDONIA, Mich. – The No. 22 Grand Valley State Lakers head across town for their final road match of the 2019 regular season, facing the Davenport Panthers on Saturday (April 6) at 1:00 PM. The Lakers enter the lone match of the week 8-3 overall and 5-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.
GVSU is coming off a dominant 2-0 weekend on their home turf, topping McKendree 17-5 before a 20-1 win over Maryville. The McKendree game saw
Kelley Fitzgerald set the all-time, single-game record at GVSU for assists with eight. She wound up with 12 dimes on the weekend along with four goals to earn GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week. Freshman goalie
Payton Neil made 13 saves on Friday night to thwart a usually-potent Bearcat offense to earn the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week nod.
A much-improved Davenport team enters Saturday 6-5 on the season and 3-3 in conference play. The Panthers have won two of their last three games with both wins coming by double digits. Taylor Ries is tied for the GLIAC lead in assists this season with 38, going along with 21 goals for a team-best 59 points. Aaliyah Miller has scored a GLIAC-best 41 goals this season. Four different Panthers have scored 20 or more goals this season. Makenna Pitchford has gotten the start in the cage in every match this season for Davenport and has recorded 73 saves (.408 save percentage).
With a varied and potentially potent offense and consistency in net, the Panthers will provide an intriguing matchup with the Lakers this weekend. GVSULakers.com will provide links to live stats and video and @GVSUWLAX will have live Twitter updates.
