GVSU captures wins over Chestnut Hill and St. Francis, improve to 8-2

The Grand Valley State men's tennis team improved to 8-2 on Wednesday (March 6) after they captured a 5-2 victory over Chestnut Hill and a 6-1 win against St. Francis (Ill.) in Orlando, Fla. Chestnut Hill is now 5-2 on the year, while St. Francis now holds a 1-10 record. GVSU's will conclude its spring trip on Thursday (March 7) against Concordia (N.Y.) at the USTA campus with first serve at 3:30 p.m.

Grand Valley State scored the first point of the match after they won two out of three matches against the Griffins in doubles play. Jack Geissler and Martin Matov captured a 6-3 win from the No. 2 pairing, while Jack Dausman and Nicholas Urban won 7-6(5) from No. 3 doubles. Chestnut Hill was able to win at No. 1 doubles as Sebastien Lescoulie and DJ Colantone were defeated 7-5.
 
In singles, the Lakers continued their strong play as they won four out of six matches. Playing from No. 1 singles was Sebastien Lescoulie, who won 6-2, 7-6(5), while Geissler captured a 6-1, 6-3, win from the No. 2 slot. Matov won from the No. 4 spot in three sets by a score of 6-2. 5-7. 6-2, while Urban scored the Lakers final point from the No. 6 position with a 6-3, 6-3 win. The Griffins record their two points with wins from the No. 3 and No. 5 singles position. Playing from the No. 3 spot was Dausman, who fought hard but was defeated in three sets 6-7(5), 6-3, 4-6, while Eric Zwemer fell in three sets by a score of 6-4, 6-7, 10-5.

The Lakers swept St. Francis in doubles and captured the first point of the match. Marcus Muniz Infante and Nicolas Welker captured a 6-4 win from No. 1 doubles, while Zwemer and Ryan Rhoades also won 6-4 from the No. 2 pairing. GVSU completed the sweep with another 6-4 win, after Filipe Castanheira and Alex Lescoulie played from the No. 3 position.
 
In singles, the Lakers held the Saints to only one point as Colantone fell 6-4, 6-4, from the No. 1 position.  Muniz Infante battled hard from No. 2 singles and won in three sets by a score of 6-1, 5-7, 10-7. Playing from the No. 3 spot was Welker, who won 6-1, 6-2, while Rhoades tallied a 6-4, 6-0, win from the No. 4 slot. The Lakers scored two more points after Castanheria (No. 5; 6-1, 6-2) and Alex Lescoulie (No. 6; 6-2, 6-4) both won from their positions.
 
Grand Valley State will conclude its spring trip on Thursday (March 7) against Concordia (N.Y.) at the USTA campus with first serve at 3:30 p.m.
