The Grand Valley State men's and women's tennis teams return to action this weekend as they welcome Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday (Feb. 14), as the men start at 9 p.m. while the women will begin at 9:30 p.m. The Lakers will then host Indiana Tech on Saturday (Feb.16) as first serve for both matches will start at 6:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Premier Athletic & Tennis Club in Grandville, Mich.
The men return nine players from a year ago including First Team All-GLIAC selections
Sebastien Lescoulie and
Jack Geissler. During the fall season, the Lakers played in three tournaments and held a combined 76-29 singles record and a 30-16 doubles record.
The Lakers also brought in four freshmen for the 2018-19 season that includes
Jack Dausman,
Martin Matov,
Ryan Rhoades and
Nicolas Welker. Lescoulie and Geissler are both ranked in the top-10 in the Midwest Region, while Lescoulie landed in the national rankings ranked 39th. In addition, Lescoulie and Matov are also ranked in the top-10 in the regional doubles poll.
GVSU will first square-off with the Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday night to begin their 2019 season. The Wildcats enter the contest with a 15-1 record. The Lakers will then welcome the Indiana Tech Warriors as they hold a 3-4 record.
On the women's side, GVSU returns to action after they completed its 2018 fall schedule with a 10-2 record and a share of the GLIAC Regular Season title.
Madison Ballard and
Vera Griva earned First Team All-GLIAC honors, while
Marija Leko and
Marily Canellopoulos received Second Team honors and
Nicole Heiniger earned Honorable Mention allocates. Griva was also named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year.
Griva and Ballard are also ranked in the top-13 in the Midwest Region in singles, while Griva also landed in the national rankings at No. 31. In addition, Griva and
Canellopoulos were tabbed fifth in the region in doubles.
The Lakers will first play Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday night, as the Warriors enter the match with a 16-1 record, before a Saturday match against Indiana Tech, who holds a 1-4 record.
