#7 seed GVSU set to take on #2 seed Michigan Tech in GLIAC Tournament Play Wednesday

The Lakers will travel to Michigan Tech to open conference tournament play for the 2nd consecutive season

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team will begin GLIAC Tournament play on Wednesday (Nov. 20) at #23 Michigan Tech at 6:00 PM. The Lakers earned the seven seed with a 13-14 overall and an 8-8 GLIAC record, while the Huskies are the two seed as they boast a 21-6 overall and 13-3 league record. The winner will advance to Saturday's semifinal which will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.

The Lakers will be making their 23rd consecutive and 24th overall GLIAC Tournament appearance on Wednesday. GVSU owns a 35-19 all-time record in conference tournament play while owning six tournament titles (2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2013). Last season, the Lakers fell to Michigan Tech in the first-round match, 3-0. Ā 
GVSU dropped their final two matches of the regular season last weekendĀ  to Ashland on Friday, 3-1, and Wayne State, 3-2 on Saturday. Sophomore Ali Thompson finished with 26 kills across the two matches, while freshman setter Rachel Jacquay totaled 73 assists. Freshman Jaeli Primus added eight total blocks and senior Kendall Yerkes tallied 40 digs.

Primus finished the regular season leading the GLIAC in total blocks (117) and blocks per set (1.14). The Hudsonville, Mich. native also finished sixth in attack percentage (.310). Yerkes (36) and Thompson (34) finished first and second respectively in service aces, while Yerkes also finished fifth in digs with 422. Jacquay finished her freshman campaign ranking seventh in assists with 891.

Michigan Tech and GVSU met back on Sept. 21 in Allendale which resulted in a 3-0 win for the Huskies. The Lakers still lead the all-times series, 58-23.

The Huskies are led by Olivia Ghormley who finished third in the GLIAC in kills with 399, while Laura De Marchi led the conference in assists per set at a mark of 11.71. As a team, Michigan Tech ranks in the top-three in attack percentage, assists per set, kills per set, and digs per set. The Huskies have been ranked in the top-25 of the AVCA poll since Oct. 15.
