PREVIEW: GVSU Volleyball to conclude regular season this weekend on the road

The Lakers will begin GLIAC Tournament play on Wed. Nov. 20

11.15.2019

The Grand Valley State volleyball team will conclude the regular season this weekend as they travel to Ashland and Wayne State. On Friday, the Lakers will take on Ashland at 7:00 PM before heading to Detroit to play the Warriors on Saturday at 2:00 PM. GVSU is currently 13-12 overall and 8-6 in GLIAC play.

The Lakers dropped a tough 3-0 decision at home against Wisconsin-Parkside last Friday night, but bounced back and swept Purdue Northwest on Saturday. GVSU, winners of five out of their last six, has clinched a spot in the GLIAC tournament, although their seeding is still up for grabs. If the Lakers sweep the weekend's matchups, they will be guaranteed a top-five seed. A chance at the four seed is still a possibility, (SVSU loses twice) which would allow GVSU to host a quarterfinal match. Dropping the pair or splitting the matches would result in a five through eight seed for the tournament. The quarterfinal match will take place Wednesday, November 20.

Freshman Jaeli Primus continues to shine in her first season at the collegiate level. The Hudsonville, Mich. native has led the GLIAC the entire year in total blocks and blocks per set and currently, her 109 total blocks is 13 more than any other player. Senior Kendall Yerkes remains in the top-five in two statistical categories with 4.55 digs per set (4th) and 0.36 service aces per set (2nd), while freshman setter Rachel Jacquay ranks 8th in assists per set with 9.31.

at Ashland – Friday Nov. 15 (7:00 P.M)

The Eagles currently sit in third place in the GLIAC standings with GVSU and Davenport remaining on their schedule. Ashland defeated the Lakers 3-0 in Allendale back on September 28, but with more game experience under their belt, GVSU will look for a different result this time around. Erin Krupar ranks fifth in the GLIAC in kills with 338 and Lexi Lombardo is second in attack percentage (.333). Setter Zoey Peck leads the conference in assists per set at 11.36.

GVSU leads the all-time series 29-7

at Wayne State – Saturday Nov. 16 (2:00 P.M.)

The Warriors clinched a GLIAC Tournament berth last weekend and are amongst the hottest teams in the league as they are winners of four straight. At 7-7 in GLIAC play, Wayne State is currently tied for sixth place with a chance at moving up to the five seed with a successful weekend. WSU will play host to Davenport on Friday before the Lakers come into Detroit Saturday afternoon.

GVSU and Wayne State played a back and forth five set affair on September 27 in Allendale with the Warriors taking the final set, 15-13. The Lakers however, lead the all-time series 52-33.
