The #11 Grand Valley State women claimed a convincing 204.5-95.5 victory over Wayne State Saturday afternoon in the final home dual meet of the season, while the #3 GVSU men dropped a close 152-142 decision to the #8 Warriors. The men's dual came down to theĀ final event of the day, the 400 free relay.Ā
The GVSU women won 13 of 16 events on the day, including five events in which the LakersĀ finished 1-2 and two events that went 1-2-3. Senior
Mercedes Martinez set the pool record in the 100 butterfly, finishing first in a time of 56.91.
The LakersĀ opened with a win in the 400 medley relay as
Freyja Garbaccio,
Samantha Laurich,
Mercedes Martinez and
Lara DeibelĀ touched first in a time of 3:56.84. The relay team of
Meda Kulbaciauskaite,
Celia Hoag,
Hannah Richard and
Allison Wells touched second in 3:58.52. GVSU dominated the 1000 free with a 1-2-3 finish led by
Melina Goebel who touched first in 10:31.98.
Caroline BreretonĀ touched second (10:43.46) and
Megan ShaughnessyĀ third (10:49.23).
Allison Wells hit the wall first in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.88, followed by
Lara DeibelĀ in second (1:57.19) and
Sidney Weaver in fourth (2:01.22).
Freyja GarbaccioĀ notched a second-place finish in the 100 back (1:00.00), while
Melina de CortĀ was third (1:01.16) and
Hailey GarlichĀ fourth (1:02.73).Ā
Mikayla KarasekĀ won on the 1-meter board with a score of 259.27 and finished second on the 3-meter board with a score of 248.25.
Nicole Carlson finished third on the 3-meter board (214.72) and fourth on the 1-meter board 184.87.Ā
Celia HoagĀ won the 100 breast in a time of 1:07.13, followed by
Samantha LaurichĀ in second (1:07.52) and
Paige Hoeve in third (1:10.41). GoebelĀ picked up another win in the 200 fly (2:09.81), while Martinez was third (2:15.53).
Hannah Richard finished in the rare tie for first in the 50 free (24.77), while
Meda KulbaciauskaiteĀ was third in a time of 25.64. DeibelĀ won the 100 free (53.32), followed by Richard in third (54.17) and Weaver in fourth (56.27).
Caroline BreretonĀ won the 200 back (2:05.62), while Wells finished third (2:12.02). LaurichĀ led a 1-2 finish in the 200 breast with a time of 2:25.28, while HoagĀ was second in 2:25.59. GoebelĀ continued to dominate with her third win of the day, this one coming in the 500 free (5:12.93), followed by ShaughnessyĀ in second (5:19.96) and
Charlotte BreretonĀ in fourth (5:24.67). Martinez set the GVSU pool record in the 100 fly with her win, while Richard was second (58.10) and KulbaciauskaiteĀ fourth (1:02.13). DeibelĀ picked up her second win of the day with a first-place finish in the 200 IM (2:10.03), followed by LaurichĀ in second (2:14.32) and GarbaccioĀ in third (2:15.99). The Lakers' 400 free relay team of Martinez, Kulbaciauskaite, Weaver and GoebelĀ hit the wall second in 3:41.05.Ā
The Laker men used superior depth to bring the men's dual down to the final event of the day as the Warriors won 13 events. However, Grand Valley State went 2-3-4 in five events and 2-3 in another. GVSU's 400 medley relay team of

Jesse Goodyear won the first of his two individual events when he touched the wall first in the 1000 free (10:31.98), followed closely by Mortiz Bartels in second (9:38.68) and
Jonathan Loshinskie in fourth (10:05.53).
Cade VrugginkĀ hit the wall second in the 200 free (1:44.96), while
Daniel Mullen was third (1:45.37) and
Eric Klein fourth (1:48.09).
Harry Shalamon hit the wall second in the 100 back with a time of 51.33, followed by
Tabor SmythĀ in fourth (54.17) and Joe Zlotnick in fifth (54.76).Ā
