#3 Grand Valley State Takes Down #1 Indianapolis, 151-147, In Men's S&D

Keegan Hawkins wins three events and Lakers claim final relay for the win

The third-ranked Grand Valley State men's swimming & diving team defeated #1-ranked Indianapolis Saturday afternoon 151-147 in the final dual meet of the season that came down to the final event. Freshman Keegan Hawkins won three individual events and GVSU won the 200 free relay to secure the win. The Lakers will next be in action at the GLIAC Championships Feb. 20-23.

Grand Valley State won eight events and used depth to defeat the top-ranked Greyhounds. The Lakers' 400 medley relay team of Harry Shalamon, Keegan Hawkins, Oscar Saura Armengol and Ben Walling finished second (3:24.74), while the relay team of Noah Ellis, Marius Mikalauskas, Joe Zlotnick and JD Ham touched third (3:28.41). Jesse  Goodyear finished second in the 1000 free (9:29.07), followed by Moritz Bartels in fourth (9:43.88). Cade Vruggink touched fourth in the 200 free (1:45.23) and Harry Shalamon won the 100 back (50.96). Hawkins added a win in the 100 breast (57.32), while Mikalauskas touched third (57.61). Saura Armengol touched second in the 200 fly (1:55.13) and Goodyear finished fourth (1:59.78). Chris Kelly finished third on the 3-meter board with a score of 279.70 and fourth on the 1-meter (228.70). 

A major turning point came in the 50 free when the Lakers went 1-2-3. Walling touched first (21.33), followed by Ham in second (21.40) and Bruce in third (21.66). GVSU added a 2-3-4 finished in the 100  free as Walling touched second (46.83), Ham third (47.08) and Eric Klein fourth (47.65). Shalamon added a second win when he touched first in the 200 back (1:50.19), followed by Tabor Smyth in second (1:54.01). Hawkins led a 1-2-4 finish in the 200 breast when he touched first in 2:05.71. Mikalauskas was second (2:05.92) and Ahmed Nabih fourth (2:07.69). Goodyear added another second in the 500 free (4:39.17), while Bartels was fourth (4:45.91). Hawkins picked up a key win in the 200 IM when he hit the wall first in 1:52.77, while Nabih was third (1:56.61) and Mikalauskas was fourth (1:57.41). Saura Armengol won the 100 fly in 49.74 and Shalamon touched fourth (51.71). Grand Valley State closed out the dual win when Walling, Saura Armengol, Bruce and Ham dominated the 200 free with a time of 1:23.60, three seconds ahead of Indianapolis.Tthe relay team of Klein, Zlotnick, Owen Ganzer and Vruggink finished third (1:26.43).
