The Lakers found themselves in a hole early as they would trail MTU 5-1 after the first six points scored. GVSU regained some ground however, bringing the set to 10-5 but the early deficit would prove to be too much for the Lakers to overcome. After taking a 19-10 lead over GVSU, the Huskies closed the second set just a little while later to take set one, 25-15.
The second set started out much more competitive between the two squads. A block from Brower opened the scoring before the teams would trade points back and forth to a 5-5 tie. After a quick 10-7 lead by Michigan Tech, GVSU rattled off three straight thanks to kills from Butsavich and Brower and a Huskie attack error to tie things up at 10. The Lakers then put up a 7-4 run to take a 17-4 lead. That margin would quickly be diminished by the Huskies however and the teams found themselves in an 18-all stalemate. Once again a 20-18 Laker lead would be erased as the Huskies took the 23-20 lead before eventually taking the second set 25-23.
GVSU struck first in the third, taking a 2-0 lead thanks to a Huskie attack error and a Brower kill. The Lakers would find themselves up 6-4 a little while later after a block and attack error but would quickly be tied at 7-all. After a 10-10 score, the Huskies rattled off three straight before GVSU tallied three-straight points of their own to knot the match at 13-13. The teams would play back and forth volleyball from there, tying at points 14, 18, and 20 before the Huskies managed to extend one final lead to a final 25-23 score.
