The Grand Valley State men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened the 2018-19 campaign with a pair of wins Friday night at Calvin College. The #9 men claimed a 168-54 victory over Calvin, while the #16 women defeated Hillsdale 179-50 and Calvin 161-78. GVSU will return to action Saturday (Oct. 20) at Lewis University.
Women
GVSU opened with a win in the 200 medley relay as Freyja Garbacccio,
Celia Hoag,
Hannah Richard and
Lara Deibel touched in 1:47.53.
Abigail Sauerbrei,
Paige Hoeve,
Melina Goebel and
Sidney Weaver hit the wall third in 1:51.45.
Caroline Brereton led a 1-2-3 finish in the 1000 free with a time of 10:35.63, followed by
Megan Shaughnessy in second (10:42.68) and
Charlotte Brereton in third (10:53.63).
Melina Goebel won the 200 free in a time of 1:54.64, followed by Sauergrei in third (1:59.55) and
Allison Wells in fourth (2:00.32).
Hannah Richard won the 50 free (24.65) and
Mercedes Martinez finished third (24.88).
Samantha Laurich led a 1-2 finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.49, while Deibel touched second (2:10.51). Martinez and Richard tied for first in the 100 fly, touching in 58.16. Deibel won the 100 free (53.68), followed by Weaver in second (54.89) and Brooke Ellenbaas in fourth (56.16).
Garbaccio finished second in the 100 back (1:00.06), followed by
Caroline Brereton in third (1:00.81) and Laurich in fourth (1:00.97). Goebel led a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:09.69, followed by Sauerbrei in second (5:16.42) and Shaughnessy in third (5:18.36). Hoag tallied a second-place finish in the 100 breast (1:06.90) and the Lakers closed with a second-place finish in the 200 free as Garbaccio, Martinez, Wells and Shaughnessy touched in 1:40.55.
Mikayla Karasek won the 1-meter board with a scored of 261.25 and added another win in the 3-meter (260.80).
Nicole Taormina was second on the 3-meter board (232.15) and
Nicole Carlson third (218.40).
Men
The Laker men opened with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay as
Harry Shalamon,
Keegan Hawkins,
Gabriel Souza and
Ben Walling hit the wall in 1:32.08.
Tabor Smyth,
Ahmed Nabih, Joe Zlotnick and
Jack Bruce finished third (1:36.75).
Moritz Bartels led a 1-2-3 finish in the 1000 free with a time of 9:38.30, followed by
Jesse Goodyear in second (9:38.89) and
Jonathan Loshinskie in third (10:07.00).
Oscar Saura-Armengol finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.57, while Nabih was third (1:44.11) and
Cade Vruggink fourth (1:44.23). Senior
Ben Walling was first in the 50 free (21.35), followed by
JD Ham in second (21.38) and
Jack Bruce in third (21.82).
Keegan Hawkins won the 200 IM in 1:54.51), while Shalamon was second (1:58.14) and
Trevor Sallee third (2:01.73). GVSU added another 1-2-3 finish in the 100 fly with a time of 48.39, while Saura Armengol was second (50.53) and Zlotnick in third (52.59). Ham won the 100 free (47.61), followed by
Lauri Hatunen in second (47.67) and Vruggink in third (47.92). Shalamon won the 100 back (49.76), while Smyth was third (53.72). Goodyear won the 500 free (4:40.98) and Bartels was second (4:41.22).
Hawkins won the 1000 free in 57.31 and the Lakers' 200 free relay team of Souza, Saura-Armengol, Ham and Walling touched first in 1:24.39.
Jordan Green won both the 1-meter (219.85) and 3-meter diving events (178.95).
