Lakers Add Guard Brett Lauf to Men’s Basketball Program

6’1” point guard averaged 26.0 points per game as a senior, earned All-Ohio First Team honors

Grand Valley State has announced the addition of Brett Lauf to the Laker men's basketball program, as the 6'1" guard from Napoleon, Ohio will begin his collegiate career at GVSU next season. A First Team All-State point guard, Lauf had a strong prep career at Napoleon High School in northwest Ohio.

Lauf was a major reason his Wildcats team captured not only a sectional championship in 2016, but also the district title that year, the first Napoleon team to become district champions in 35 years. During the 2015-16 season - his junior year - Lauf averaged 15 points, six assists, five rebounds, and nearly two steals per game as the Wildcats finished 20-6.

His averages increased during his senior season, as Lauf provided 26 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals per game. He shot 40 percent from the field and 70 percent at the line. At the conclusion of the season, he was named to the All-Ohio Division II First Team, while also earning Northern Lakes League (NLL) Player of the Year and District 7 Player of the Year honors.

"Brett has been an outstanding high school player and did a terrific job of leading his team his entire career," said head coach Ric Wesley, who will enter his 14th year at the helm of the Laker program. "He is one the top players in northwest Ohio and is a solid point guard who has a great feel for the game. He also has very good range on his jump shot, as evidenced by his 94 made three-pointers last season. We think Brett has a bright future with us and we're happy to have him on board."

Lauf was an All-Ohio Division II Honorable Mention selection as a junior, when he led Napoleon to the district championship and the regional semifinals. That season, the Wildcats were ranked #10 in the Ohio state rankings en route to their 20-win campaign. Also during his junior year, Lauf had a terrific follow-up dunk that earned him recognition on ESPN's Top-10 Plays segment. For his career, Lauf scored 1,219 points at Napoleon, which included a 50-point game during his Wildcat career.

His family lineage is impressive, as well. Lauf's father played collegiate basketball and his uncle was on Napoleon's state championship team. His brother Jordan is the school's all-time leading scorer and recently finished his collegiate playing career at Toledo.

On the soccer field, Lauf earned First Team All-Ohio honors as a junior and received Second Team All-Ohio plaudits during his senior season, becoming just the second player in school history to be named All-Ohio twice. His 99 career goals on the pitch are 39 more than the previous school record.
