EVANSVILLE, Ind. - #36 Grand Valley State managed to narrowly defeat #34 Southern Indy in Evansville, Ind. on Friday afternoon (3/24). The Lakers won by a 5-4 score to move their record to 12-4 on the season. The Lakers have one more match Saturday (3/25) against Indianapolis before they start their GLIAC season against Michigan Tech a week later (4/1).
The Lakers managed to take an early 1-0 lead as the duo of
Zach Phillips and Alex Van de Steenoven defeated James Hardiman and Denis Davydov by a score of 8-2 in No. 1 doubles. The Screaming Eagles were able to win their matches at the No. 2 and 3 doubles position to take a 2-1 lead in the team score into singles play.
Finishing their match first in singles play was Sebastian Lescoulie and Hardiman in the No. 1 spot. Lescoulie was able to secure the victory 6-1, 1-0 to tie the team score at 2-2. Finishing next was the No. 6 spot which featured a Laker victory as well, as
Nicholas Urban took down Andrew Dones 6-4, 6-0. With a 3-2 lead,
Jack Geissler won his match against Samuel Kiladejo 6-2, 6-3 to take the 4-2 lead. The Screaming Eagles would get a victory at the No. 2 spot to bring the team score to 4-3 and keep their hopes alive.
Jack Heiniger made sure those hopes were short lived as he took down his Southern Indy opponent and secured the 5-4 Laker victory.
