The Grand Valley State Lakers fell on the road, 82-50, to the Michigan Wolverines in exhibition action at the Crisler Center Friday night.
Hunter Hale had eight points, all in the second half, to lead the Lakers in scoring while
Chris Dorsey had a team-high six rebounds to go along with six points. Grand Valley State held their own against th Wolverines on the glass, pulling down 37 rebounds compared to 43 by Michigan.
The Wolverines jumped out with two three-pointers to open the scoring, but the Lakers found themselves within four points five minutes into the game. A 14-2 run for the Wolverines over the next six minutes put the Lakers in a hole. Grand Valley State showed heart in the second half, scoring 29 of their 50 points after intermission. The Lakers shot 31.3% (20-64) from the field, including four made three-pointers in the contest. GVSU also did well to protect the basketball, turning over the basketball just 13 times while forcing 12 Michigan turnovers. The Lakers also showed some depth in the tune-up contest with 24 of their points coming off the bench.
Ben Lubitz and
Lance Dollison each had seven points for Grand Valley State while Dorsey and
Zach West both poured in six. Michigan was led by junior transfer Charles Matthews, who sat out all of last season after transferring from Kentucky. Matthews scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
The Lakers begin the regular season next Friday (Nov. 10) against Missouri-St. Louis in Big Rapids, Michigan in the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover. The Lakers first home game is Tuesday, November 14, against Olivet at the Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale.
