Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Grand Valley State Lakers got double-digit scoring from both
Justin Greason and
Zach West, but couldn't keep up with the fifth-ranked Barry Buccaneers Saturday, falling 94-69 in the first true road game of the season for GVSU. Greason neared a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds while West added 11 points and
Drake Baar scored nine. The Lakers are now 3-3 on the year while Barry improves to 4-1 on the year and rebounds from a loss to No. 3 Bellarmine a day ago.
The Lakers hung tough with the highly ranked Bucs early in the first half. A 9-2 sprint by GVSU gave the Lakers an 11-8 lead five minutes into the contest, but Barry responded with 18 unanswered points to gain the separation they would never relinquish. The Bucs had a 22-point edge at intermission, but the Lakers played a competitive second half, outscored by three in the final 20 minutes.
The Lakers, a team that has been predicated on defensive pressure and turnovers, were only able to force five giveaways by Barry.
Hunter Hale was held under the ten-point mark for the first time as a Laker, scoring eight points on 2-of-9 shooting. GVSU shot 40% as a team compared to a 46% clip for the Bucs. Greason, who went 4-of-5 from the field, scored nine of his 11 points in the second half.
GVSU looks to shake off the long trip and prepare for GLIAC play, which begins Thursday (Nov. 30) in Detroit with the Lakers set to face Wayne State to start the conference season. The Lakers will also face Davenport this Saturday before getting their first home conference game in a Downtown Thursday at the DeltaPlex.
