The Grand Valley State men's swimming & diving team claimed a 184-109 victory over Ball State Saturday afternoon in Muncie, Indiana, while the Laker women dropped a close 164-136 decision to the Cardinals. Grand Valley State will next be in action on Thursday, Nov. 30 at the Calvin Invitational.
The Laker men won 11 events en route to the dominating victory over the Cardinals. The 400 medley relay opened with an impressive victory as
Ben Walling,
Ahmed Nabih,
Marius Mikalauskas and
Harry Shalamon touched the wall first in a time of 3:30.56, over three seconds ahead of second place Ball State.
James Zetka,
Lauri Hatunen, Joe Zlotnick and
JD Ham hit the wall third in 3:35.19.Â
Freshman
Moritz Bartels finished first in the 1650 free (16:14.57) and led a 1-2-3 finish.
Zach Reau was second (17:08.48) and
Jonathan Loshinskie was third (17:11.57). GVSU went 1-2-3 again in the 200 free when Oscar Saura Armengol hit the wall first in 1:44.24, followed by
Ahmed Nabih in second (1:45.76) andÂ
Harry Shalamon in third (1:46.78).
Ben Walling finished first in the 100 back (53.71) and
James Zetka was second (54.49).Â
Lauri Hatunen touched second in the 100 breast (1:00.85), while
JD Ham was third in a time of 1:01.30. Gonzalo Rodriguez won the 200 fly (1:56.40), followed by
Grant Borregard in second (2:00.23). Nabih was second in 50 free (22.40) and
Liam Little hit the wall third (22.64). Rodriguez won the 100 free in a time of 47.64, while Little was third (49.52).Â
GVSU continued to dominate the distance free events with a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free. Saura Armengol was first (4:47.06), followed by Mikalauskas in second (4:53.20) and Borregard in third (4:53.47).Â
Ben Walling won the 200 back with a time of 1:56.27, while Hatunen was second in the 200 breast (2:14.66) and Ham third (2:18.14).Â
Zlotnick finished first in the 100 fly (52.07) and Shalamon hit the wall second in 52.31. The Lakers swam exhibition only in the 200 IM, but Nabih (1:54.57) and Saura Armengol (1:59.28) both went under the 2:00 minute mark. The 400 free relay team of Mikaluskas, Hatunen, Litte and Walling hit the wall in 3:12.14 as an exhibition team, followed closely by Ham,
David Turner, Rodriguez and Zlotnick (3:13.43).
The Lakers dominated diving as
Joe Gucwa led a 1-2-3 finish on the 1-meter board with a first-place score of 274.58.
Jared Berger was second (245.40) and
Alex Miller third (228.90).  Berger led a 1-2-3 finish on the 3-meter board with a score of 264.30, followed by Miller in second (254.33) and Gucwa in third (230.48).Â
On the women's side, GVSUÂ finished third in the 400 medley relay as
Allison Wells,
Celia Hoag,
Mercedes Martinez and
Sidney Weaver hit the wall in 4:05.17.Â
GVSU dominated the distance free events, opening with a 1-2-3 finish in the 1650 free as
Megan Shaughnessy finished first (17:39.37), followed by
Julia Suriano in second (18:02.01) and
Caroline Brereton in third (18:05.66). Melina Goebel won the 500 free (5:10.71), while Shaughnessy touched second (5:11.64) and
Abigail Sauerbrei third (5:17.20). Goebel finished first in the 200 free (1:55.67) and
Kathryn Culver was third (1:58.91).Â
Allison Wells touched third in the 100 back (1:01.38), while Hoag was third in the 100 breast (1:11.80) and Culver was third in the 100 free. Goebel touched second in the 200 fly (2:09.33) and
Hannah Richard was second in the 50 free (24.91).Â
Brereton touched the wall first in the 200 back (2:07.39), followed by Wells in third (2:13.05). Hoag was second in the 200 breast (2:31.15) and Richard was  third in the 100 fly (59.58).Â
Mikala Karasek finished second on both the 3-meter board (225.98) and the 1-meter board (240.38). Nicole Thomas was third on the 1-meter board (220.88).Â
The Laker women closed with an impressive win in the 400 free relay as Culver, Goebel, Weaver and Richard touched first in 3:36.28.Â
