ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State Lakers had a pair of nail biters in Big Rapids, Michigan over the weekend to start the year, but they opened their home schedule with a bang after a 96-64 win over the Olivet Comets Tuesday night at the Fieldhouse Arena. Four different Lakers scored in double figures as GVSU continued their early trend of sharing the offensive load.
Justin Greason and
Hunter Hale led the way with 14 points apiece. Hale has scored in double figures in each of his first three games of his GVSU career.
Ben Lubitz added 12 points and
Zach West had 10 in his first start of the season.
The Lakers (2-1, 0-0 GLIAC) shot over 50% from the floor (36-71) and knocked down 12 of 25 three-point attempts. GVSU dominated on the boards, out-rebounding Olivet 46-33. The Comets shot 39% from the field (24-62) and went just 6-26 from beyond the arc. Jalen Adams led the way for Olivet with 21 points and Tracy Edmonds contributed 16 in the loss.
With the game tied at 8-8 four minutes into the contest, the Lakers (2-1, 0-0 GLIAC) flexed their muscle over the next eight minutes, outscoring the Comets 20-8 during the stretch. After the Comets settled down for a few minutes, a 10-3 Lakers sprint put Grand Valley State ahead by 14 points with under three minutes to play in the half. A pair of free throws for Olivet slowed the Lakers a touch, but GVSU scored the last three points of the first half then the first seven of the second period; a 10-0 run that gave the home team a 22-point edge with 18 minutes to go.
It was all Lakers in the second half, opening up a lead as large as 36. An alley-oop from
Lance Dollison to
Drake Baar at the three-minute mark put the Lakers over 90 points for the game as Grand Valley State coasted to a lopsided win. The crowd erupted when walk-on
Grant Mitchell knocked down a shot with under a minute left to cap off the scoring for the Lakers.
The Lakers stay at home for another non-conference tilt when they host Grace Bible this Thursday (Nov. 16) at 7:00 PM in the GVSU Fieldhouse.
