The Grand Valley State men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened the 2017-18 campaign at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and earned a split. The Laker men claimed an impressive 141-102 victory, while the women dropped a 142-101 decision. GVSU will next be in action this Friday (Oct. 20), at Calvin, and at home versus Lewis on Saturday (Oct. 21).Â
The GVSU men won 10 events in the dual, opening with a victory in the 200 medley relay as
Harry Shalamon, Marius Mikalaouskas,
Oscar Saura and
JD Ham hit the wall first in 1:33.91.Â
Saura continued his strong performance in the first meet of his college career as he hit the wall first in the 200 free (1:43.04) and 200 butterfly (1:52.82).Â
GVSUÂ went 1-2 in the 50 free with
Ben Walling hitting the wall first in 21.37, followed by Ham in second (21.96). Walling added another first-place finish when he touched the wall first in the 100 free (47.04).Â
The Lakers swept the 400 IM as
Ahmed Nabih hit the wall first in 4:11.41, but was followed closely by
Grant Borregard in second (4:13.79) and
Lauri Hatunen in third (4:14.85).Â
Nabih also finished second in the 500 free with a time of 4:45.05, while
Dayen Wilson touched fourth in the 500 (4:49.39) and third in the 1000 free (9:53.53). Mikalauskas touched the wall first in the 200 breast (2:06.26), followed by Nabih in second (2:12.12) and Hatunen in third (2:13.86). Shalamon finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:51.61.Â
Jared Gregory won both the 1-meter (271.87) and 3-meter (281.09)Â diving events.
Christopher Kelly was second on the 1-meter, whileÂ
Jared Berger was fourth on the 3-meter (235.57) and fifth on the 1-meter (224.55).
The Lakers' 200 free relay team of Shalamon, Ham, David Turner and Walling touched the wall second in 1:25.89
The women's 200 medley relay team of
Freyja Garbaccio,
Celia Hoag,
Hannah Richard and
Sidney Weaver finished second in a time of 1:48.67.Â
Caroline Brereton won the 1000 free in a time of 10:42.48, while
Megan Shaughnessy was third (10:46.75).Â
Melina Goebel was second in the 200 free (1:57.07), while Hannah Taylor was fourth (2:00.66).Â
Kathrun Culver finished fourth in the 50 free with a time of 25.19.Â
Sam Postmus hit the wall first in the 400 IM with a time of 4:31.76 and
Abigail Sauerbrei was third when she hit the wall in 4:37.33.Â
Mikayla Karasek finished first on the 3-meter board with a score of 244.50 and second on the 1-meter board (214.42).
Nicole Taormina was third on the 3-meter board (222.74) and fourth on the 1-meter (204.14)
The Lakers took the top two spots and a fourth in the 200 fly as Goebel finished first (2:11.04), Sauerbrei second (2:11.43) and Garbaccio fourth (2:14.88).Â
Richard added a third in the 100 free (53.79), while Brereton was second in the 200 back (2:06.72) and Postmus third (2:08.52).Â
Sauerbrei touched the wall second in the 500 free in a time of 5:13.98, while Shaughnessy was third (5:16.17) and Goebel fourth (5:16.53).Â
GVSUÂ closed the night with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay with Weaver, Richard,
Mercedes Martinez and Culver touching the wall in 1:38.22, followed by Brooke Elenbaas,
Rachel Skoog, Taylor and Shaughnessy in third (1:42.87).
