GVSU-WSU Results
The nationally-ranked Grand Valley State men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept a GLIAC dual meet from Wayne State in dominating fashion. The seventh-ranked Laker men claimed a 198-102 victory over the #24 Warriors, while the eighth-ranked Laker women defeated #25 Wayne State 172-128. GVSU will return to action next Saturday (Jan. 14) at Findlay beginning at 1 p.m.
The Laker men won 12 events, including three by
Marius Mikalauskas (100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM), two by
Danny Abbott (50 free, 100 free) and
Brad Dalrymple (1 & 3-meter diving) and both relays (400 IM, 400 free).
The 400 medley relay team opened with an impressive win as
Harry Shalamon,
Marius Mikalauskas,
Gabriel Souza and
Danny Abbott hit the wall in 3:24.15.
Ben Walling recorded a first-place finish in the 200 free (1:43.61), while Gonzalo Rodriguez finished third (1:46.24). Shalamon touched second (51.56) and
James Zetka third (53.63) in the 100 back.
Mikalauskas picked up the first of his three individual wins in the 100 breast when he hit the wall in 56.35, while
Tim Harris was third (57.87).
Jesus Morales touched second in the 200 fly (1:57.68), followed by
Grant Borregard in third (1:58.69). Abbott notched the first of his two wins in the 50 free (21.32), followed by Walling in third (21.95). Abbott picked up his second win in the 100 free (46.33), with Walling again finishing second (47.44). Shalamon touched first in the 200 back 1:51.75 and Zetka was third (1:58.22).
Mikalauskas notched his second win when he hit the wall first in the 200 breast (2:05.95), followed by Harris in third (2:07.67).
Michael Hudson touched second in the 500 free (4:52.78), while Souza hit the wall first in the 100 fly (49.86) and Shalamon was third (51.59). Mikalauskas led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 IM as he hit the wall in 1:56.50, followed by Borregard in second (1:57.95) and Ahmed Nabih in third (1:59.28).
Brad Dalrymple led a 1-2 finish on the 1-meter board with a score of 308.47, followed by
Jared Gregory in second (282.90). Dalrymple led a 1-2-3 finish on the 3-meter board with a score of 336.45. Gregory was second (291.30) and
Joe Gucwa third (271.96).
The Lakers closed with a win in the 400 free relay as Souza,
Liam Little, Walling and Abbott hit the wall first in a pool-record time of 3:04.89.
The GVSU women won 10 events, including two each by
Leonie Van Noort,
Sam Postmus and
Emily Gallagher. In addition, the Lakers won the 400 IM relay and the 400 free relay.
The Lakers opened with a win in the 400 IM relay as
Meghan Falconer,
Emily Gallagher,
Mercedes Martinez and
Melina Goebel touched the wall in 3:59.45. Van Noort led a 1-2 finish in the 1000 free when she touched first in 10:34.56, followed by
Megan Shaughnessy in second 10:44.09. Postmus set a GVSU Pool record with a dominating swim in the 200 free (1:51.64), followed by
Kathryn Culver in second (1:59.27). Falconer was second in the 100 back (1:00.08), while Wells was third (1:00.45) and
Kaitlin Cassell fourth (1:00.52). Gallagher hit the wall first in the 100 breast (1:04.41).
Goebel finished first in the 200 fly (2:12.57), while Van Noort was second (2:15.02).
Jenn Priebe touched second in the 50 free (25.35) and Culver was second in the 100 free (55.20). Wells led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 back when she hit the wall in 2:09.54.
Meghan Falconer was second (2:10.98) and
Julia Suriano was third (2:11.71). Gallagher won the 200 breast (2:25.61) and Van Noort won the 500 free (5:04.96), followed by
Megan Shaughnessy in second (5:16.65).
Postmus picked up another win when she touched first in the 200 IM (2:12.48), while Falconer was third (2:18.21).
Mercedes Martinez added a second in the 100 fly (1:01.02) and
Kayla Marquardt was second on the 1-meter board with a score of 239.69.
The Lakers' 400 free relay team of Goebel, Gallagher, Culver and Van Noort hit the wall first in 3:37.66.
