Results GRANDVILLE, Mich. – In a battle of cross-town opponents, Grand Valley State came out on top 7-2 against the Davenport Panthers of the NAIA at the Premier Athletic Club in Grandville.
Starting the match in doubles, the 43rd-ranked Lakers (2-0) scored two hard-earned points to pull ahead early. All three doubles matches went to the wire, with the No. 2 match involving
Jack Heiniger and
Nicholas Urban going to a tiebreaker point, which the Laker duo did not win, falling 9-8 (10-1). The other two matches, with
Zach Phillips/
Alex van de Steenoven as the No. 1 pairing and
Andrew Bole/
Michael Kaye the No. 3, were both 9-7 decisions in favor of GVSU.
Singles play was where the Lakers pulled away from the Panthers, where they won five out of six matches over their opponents. Phillips (6-2, 6-2) in the No. 2 spot, Bole (6-4, 7-6 (7-4)) in the No. 4 spot, and Kaye (6-4, 6-4) in the No. 6 position were the only Laker singles players to win in straight sets.
GVSU is back in action on Sunday (Feb. 21) on the road when they travel to Ohio to take on Northwestern Ohio at 2 pm.
