MIDLAND, Mich. - Just one day after dropping their semifinal match, Grand Valley State men's tennis responded to cruise past Wayne State, 5-2, in the 3rd Place Match of the 2015 GLIAC Tournament. It's the best finish for Grand Valley State (16-5) since placing second in the 2008 GLIAC Tournament.
The Lakers go into a hole early by dropping two of the three matchs to fall behind 2-1 to the Warriors (10-11).
Jack Heiniger/
Quinn Sylow in the No. 3 pairing picked up the lone win for GVSU overÂ
Ryan Carlson/Harvey Reed, 8-5, to prevent a doubles sweep.
Grand Valley State rebounded from their less-than-successful doubles action, winning four singles matches in straight sets to earn the minimum five points and win the match. Francis Bertrand in the No. 1 downed Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (6-1, 6-1), Alex van de Steenoven as the No. 3 beat Trey Keating (6-2, 6-2), Heiniger defeated Gopinath Menta (6-1, 6-2) in the No. 4 spot, and Bryan Hodges earned the final point in the No. 5 spot with a win over Luke Ruocco (6-2, 6-2).
After the championship match, the All-GLIAC teams were announced, and three Laker players saw their names on the teams. Francis Bertrand and Zach Phillips were named to the All-GLIAC First Team, while Bryan Hodges was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention. Bertrand held a 23-7 overall record during the 2014-15 season and a record of 7-2 against GLIAC opponents, while Phillips recorded a 13-13 overall record and a 7-2 record in the conference to be placed on the First Team. Hodges tallied a 23-6 overall record and was 8-1 against conference opponents to be named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention.
Grand Valley State will now wait for their name to be called to compete in the 2015 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament. The first match will take place on Saturday, May 2.Â
