Lakers Welcome Ohio Dominican and Tiffin for GLIAC Twinbills

GVSU continues current 14-game homestand

Live Stats

Grand Valley State has won seven of its last eight home games over the past two weeks in Allendale and the Lakers will continue their homestand this weekend. On Saturday (Apr. 11), GVSU squares off with Ohio Dominican before facing Tiffin on Sunday (Apr. 12).

Since returning from its Spring Break trip in Clermont, Fla. with a 13-4 record, Grand Valley State has gone 10-3 in less than ideal weather conditions in the last few weeks. Overall, the Lakers are 23-7 overall and sit in second place in the GLIAC standings with a 9-2 league record.

At home this season - where GVSU has spent most of its time since returning from Florida - the Lakers are 8-2. Both losses are one-run defeats. Grand Valley State is one of three GLIAC teams (Tiffin and Wayne State) to have just two league losses, while Walsh is in first place with an 8-1 record.

In Sunday's doubleheader against Tiffin, the team will honor its only senior - pitcher Sarah Wyse - prior to the opening game. Also that day, Grand Valley State will be wearing special camouflage jerseys.

GVSU swept its last two home doubleheaders, topping Lake Erie (9-0, 18-10) and Lake Superior State (15-4, 6-3). Prior to a split with Ashland, the Lakers also swept Wayne State (3-2, 4-2), the defending regional champions.

In game one on Tuesday against Lake Superior State, junior third baseman McKenze Supernaw had a never-before-seen performance. In GVSU's 15-4 win, Supernaw went 5-for-5 with a double, two home runs, and seven RBI. The seven ribbies and 12 total bases are the most by a Laker since at least 2000, while she is just the third GVSU player since then to tally five hits in a game - and the only one to do so with an extra base hit.

Supernaw now ranks sixth in the GLIAC with 25 RBI, while sophomore teammate Jenna Lenza is fifth with 27 ribbies. Lenza also ranks fourth in home runs (five) and runs (25), while her 37 hits and 13 walks are sixth-most. Freshman pitcher Courtney Reinhold is tied for second in the GLIAC with nine victories and is fourth with a 1.35 earned run average.

On Saturday at 1:00 p.m., Ohio Dominican comes into Allendale. The reigning GLIAC champions have had a rough a start to this season, posting a 7-25 overall record and a 3-7 mark in conference play. ODU lost its first 14 games of the year and after sweeping Lake Superior State on Mar. 30, the Panthers lost four straight road games to Findlay and Tiffin. Ohio Dominican is 0-8 in true road games this year.

Tiffin will meet up with the Lakers on Sunday, with the opener starting at noon. The Dragons enter the weekend in third place in the GLIAC standings with an 8-2 league record. Overall, Tiffin is 17-11 in 2015 and will bring a four-game win streak into the weekend, which includes home sweeps of ODU and Malone. The Dragons are 3-3 in road contests.

After this weekend, Grand Valley State will close out its 14-game homestand with its final regular season home games next Wednesday (Apr. 15) against Saginaw Valley State. That doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m.
