Game NotesDetroit – After collecting three wins in its four-game series with Saginaw Valley State, the Grand Valley State baseball team will head east, seeking a second consecutive sweep of Wayne State. The No. 18 Lakers, now 13-8 overall and 5-3 in GLIAC play, will face the Warriors twice on Friday (April 3) and Saturday (April 4).
Both doubleheaders are slated to begin at 12 p.m. EDT.
Battle of the Valleys RewindGVSU's pitching carried it through its home-opening series against the Cardinals.
The bullpen, which struggled through much of the season's first month, did not allow a single run in 9.1 innings of work. In the final three games of the series, Laker starters
Zach Anderson,
Patrick Kelly and
Tim Tarter combined for a 0.93 earned run average and 10 strikeouts over 19.1 innings. Moreover, the GVSU pitching staff yielded just two runs in the final 28 innings of the four-game set.
Following a 5-1 loss in game one on Saturday (March 28), the Lakers capped the doubleheader with a 5-0 win, thumped the Cardinals 11-1 on Sunday (March 29) and, after a 48-hour postponement, earned a 5-1 victory on Tuesday (March 31).
Stifling the WarriorsEntering this weekend's series, GVSU carries a 95-55 all-time record against Wayne State. The Lakers swept their regular season series with the Warriors last season, posting a pair of 3-0 shutouts and a 4-1 triumph.
Record WatchRedshirt senior shortstop
Kevin Zak heads into this weekend with 165 career runs, the fourth-most in school history. The Novi, Michigan native needs 10 runs to break
Giancarlo Brugnoni's ('14) record.
How Sweep it isFor a second consecutive week, GVSU swept the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week awards. Senior infielder
Jesse Abel hit .500 with three RBIs, two runs and two walks to earn Player of the Week honors, while redshirt junior starting pitcher
Patrick Kelly tossed 7.2 scoreless innings and tallied six strikeouts—tied for his second-highest total in an outing—for his second win of the year, as well as a second consecutive Pitcher of the Week laurel.
All Good Things Must EndTwo impressive streaks came to an end in last weekend's series.
Jamie Potts saw a 36-game on-base streak, the longest of his career, come to a close in Sunday's (March 29) victory. The other streak, GVSU's 17 consecutive wins at home, ended in a 5-1 loss on Saturday (March 28). Only the 2004 and 2006 Lakers managed to win 17 straight home games.
No One Crosses on His WatchPatrick Kelly has not allowed a run in his last 17 innings of work. By pitching 7.2 scoreless innings against Saginaw Valley State (March 28), Kelly became the first Laker to throw at least seven shutout innings in back-to-back starts since Anthony Campanella did the same against Minnesota State (March 11) and California (Pa.) (March 17) in 2013.
Drawing First BloodIn games when the Lakers score first, they are 11-1. Additionally, when GVSU scores in the first inning, it is a perfect 10-0 this season. The Lakers have led after the first inning nine times this season, winning all of those games.
We Just Need SevenWhen a GVSU starting pitcher throws at least seven innings, the club is 5-0 this season.
