Box Score Grand Valley State dropped a 75-67 GLIAC road tilt Sunday afternoon at Findlay. GVSU is now 7-5 overall and 3-3 in GLIAC action. The Lakers will host Walsh Thursday (Jan. 8) at 8 p.m.
Findlay shot the lights out in the opening 20 minutes, hitting 61.9 percent from the floor (13-21) and 55.6 percent from 3-point land (5-9). The Oilers led 5-0 before a
Darren Washington layup got GVSU on the board and started a 9-0 run. UF went on a run of its own, outscoring GVSU 15-6 over a six minute span to take a 20-15 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. The teams traded buckets in the final nine minutes and a layup by freshman guard
Myles Miller at the buzzer sent the Lakers into the lockerroom trailing by four (36-32).
However, that would be as close as the Lakers would get as Findlay continued to shoot well. The Oilers led 38-34 and went on a  19-6 run to build a 57-40 advantage with 12:50 left in the game. Senior guard
Ryan Sabin hit a 3-pointer to close the margin to 14 points (57-43) and started a slow crawl back into the game. Sophomore
Luke Ryskamp hit a jumper and fellow sophomore
Trevin Alexander hit a 3-pointer. Sabin hit back-to-back layups and Alexander added a pair of free throws to pull the Lakers to within eight points (62-54) with 9:22 left in the game. Freshman guard
Sam McClendon notched a steal and slammed one home to pull GVSU even closer (62-56) with nine minutes left.Â
Neither team was able to get much going for the next two minutes of game action, but Findlay upped its lead to eight (64-56) with a pair of free throws and the Oilers hit four free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.Â
Sabin and
Ricardo Carbajal led four players in double figures with 16 points each. Alexander chipped in 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while Ryskamp added 11 points. Â In addition, Sabin became the 32nd player in GVSU men's basketball history to go over the 1,000-point mark (1,008) when he hit a 3-pointer midway through the second half. GVSU outrebounded the Oilers 34-24 and pulled down 18 offensive rebounds, however, Findlay shot 60.5 percent for the game from the floor (26-43) and 47.6 percent from the 3-point line (10-21).Â
