The defending NCAA Division II women's soccer national champions, two-time reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference champions and a pair of programs expected to challenge those clubs for league superiority will meet up in Allendale, Michigan this weekend (Sep. 5 & 7) for the 2014 Ramada Plaza Invitational.

No. 1 Grand Valley State, which went 24-0-1 en route to its third national title in five seasons a year ago, No. 13 Quincy—a regional finalist in the 2013 NCAA Tournament—GLVC runner-up Truman State and upstart Ferris State make up the four-club field.

The event will kick off Friday afternoon with a 4:30 p.m. match between Ferris State and Truman State. Day one will conclude when the top-ranked Lakers square off with the Hawks, a rematch of last season's NCAA Midwest Regional Championship match, at 7:00 p.m. The weekend will be capped with an 11:30 a.m. tilt between Quincy and Ferris State, followed by a 2:00 p.m. clash between GVSU and Truman State.

GVSU returns 14 letterwinners, including a pair of NSCAA All-America Second Team selections—Marti Corby and Jenny Shaba—and five other starters, from its 2013 squad. Corby and Shaba combined for 28 goals, 19 assists and 75 points in 25 matches last year. Further bolstering the offense will be Kendra Stauffer, who ranked second among all Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players with 10 assists and 32 points.

Defensively, GVSU will have to replace 2013 GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year Abbey Miller, but NSCAA All-Midwest Region First Team honoree Juane Odendaal and All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Katy Woolley will patrol the backline again. Both were starters for a unit that matched the Division II single-season record for shutouts (21) and yielded a mere four goals.

New head coach Jeff Hosler takes the reigns from Dave DiIanni—Division II's all-time leader in winning percentage (.895)—following an eight-year stint at Alma College, where he claimed a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament and regular season title. It is GVSU's first coaching change since 2003.

The 13th-ranked Hawks, led by two-time reigning GLVC Coach of the Year Dave Musso, are eyeing a ninth straight NCAA Tournament appearance and bring back NSCAA All-Midwest Region selections Ashley Burton and Taylor Lindwedel. Seniors Haylye Markway and Taylor Wakeland will bring stability to the midfield alongside Burton, who tied for the team lead with 10 goals last season.

NSCAA All-America First Team goalkeeper Jodi Chapie is gone, but all four starting defenders from a group that set school records for shutouts (16) and goals allowed (nine) are back in brown and gold uniforms.

For Truman State, head coach Mike Cannon, who ranks seventh all-time in winning percentage among active Division II coaches, guides the program into its second season in the GLVC. Although the Bulldogs will feature several new faces, five starters and 11 letterwinners return from a club that earned the 10th NCAA Tournament berth in school history.

NSCAA All-Midwest Region forward Alexis Heffernan headlines Truman State's crop of returnees. She ranked second on the team with four goals and 12 points, while her four assists were tied for the most by any Bulldog last season. Fellow NSCAA All-Midwest Region selection Lauren Seawright will anchor Truman State's defense once again. Junior defender Jessica Hanson will play a vital role on the backline as well. The Bulldogs were picked to finish second in the GLVC this season.

Ferris State, which was ranked fourth in the GLIAC Preseason Poll, enters its second season under head coach Andy McCaslin. A strong nucleus of 16 letterwinners, including All-GLIAC honorees Nichole Boehnke and Abby Merindorf, is back this fall. The Bulldogs welcome back its top nine scorers, who combined for 29 of their 30 goals during the 2013 campaign.

Last season marked the first time in program history Ferris State posted a second consecutive winning season. The club also reached the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals for the third time in the event's seven-year existence.
