MANKATO, Minn. – The No. 5 Grand Valley State women's soccer team defeated Bemidji State 2-1 behind a late game-winning goal by
Sonya Mehta in the 85
th minute Friday (Sept. 4) evening. The Lakers improve to 2-0-1 on the season.
GVSU opened the scoring off the foot of
Sonya Mehta in the 21
st minute. Mehta received a pass in the middle of the field from
Lina Rea and was able to kick it up and over the goalkeeper from just outside the box to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
Bemidji State quickly answered in the 24
th minute off a corner kick to tie the game at one. Two minutes later, the game was suspended due to heat and was resumed later in the day at 7pm central time. When play resumed, the two teams went into halftime tied at one.
In the second half, the Lakers created multiple opportunities, notching seven shots over the first 15 minutes to the Beavers one. Mehta would come through once again by scoring the go-ahead goal in the 85
th minute which would secure the win for the Lakers for her second of the match.
GVSU outshot Bemidji State 26-5 with 11-2 on target. The Lakers produced seven corner kicks to the Beavers six. Mehta scored both goals on a career high nine shots with six shots on goal.
Alex Williams notched six shots with one on target in 80 minutes of play.
Lina Rea dished out an assist for her first career point as a Laker in 73 minutes.
Kendall Aikens added four shots, while
Sarah Fromm notched three shots with two on goal.
Acadia Murphy and
Cora Conley played all 90 minutes in the win.
Macie Hunter got the start in goal and made one save.
