GVSU Claims 88-56 Win Over Purdue North Central

Trevin Alexander posts a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds

Box Score Grand Valley State tallied an 88-56 non-conference home win over Purdue North Central Saturday (Dec. 20) afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 6-4 on the year and will return to action at Wayne State on Friday, January 2 at Wayne State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Lakers jumped out to an 18-2 lead six minutes into the game. Senior guard Ryan Sabin opened the contest with a 3-pointer and scored eight points in the opening six minutes. Junior forward Ricardo Carbajal and sophomore forward Trevin Alexander each contributed four points in the opening run. However, Purdue North Central went on a 7-1 run of its own and a layup by Kendric Lee cut the GVSU lead down to 10 (19-9) with 11:21 left in the first half. Grand Valley State answered with an 11-2 spurt to build the lead back to 19 points (30-11). Sabin scored on a pair of layups, followed by sophomore forward Luke Ryskamp's hit a 3-pointer and a layup from Alexander at the 5:12 mark. Junior guard Aaron Hayes hit a pair of free throws with 2:20 left in the opening stanza to give the Lakers a 34-15 lead, but a 10-2 run by the Panthers to close the first half cut the GVSU advantage to 35-26 after 20 minutes of action. 

GVSU dominated the second half from the opening whistle with a 16-5 run. Sabin scored on a layup, followed by a 3-pointer from Hayes, another jumper from Sabin and a 3-pointer from Hayeys upped the lead to 46-30. Freshman guard Myles Miller got in the scoring column with a layup and a 3-pointer to give the Lakers a 52-30 lead with 14:56 remaining. The backcourt tandem of junior guard Darren Kapustka and Miller took over for a three minute span, scoring five and four points, respectively to up the Laker lead to 64-37. GVSU built its lead to 33 (81-48) on a layup from Ryskamp with 3:42 left. 

GVSU set season-highs in points off turnovers (29), points in the paint (48) and fast break points (14). In addition, the Lakers tallied season-highs in field goal percentage (.574), assists (21) and blocked shots (7). Sabin led five players in double figures with 20 points, five assists and five rebounds. Hayes notched a season-high with 12 points, while Alexander chipped in a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Miller scored a season-high 10 points and Ryskamp added 10 points in the scoring column. Eleven players scored for GVSU and 13 pulled down at least one rebound.
