Box Score The Grand Valley State men's basketball team claimed a 71-56 victory over Cedarville College Saturday (Nov. 22) afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 2-1 on the year, while Cedarville is 1-3. GVSU will next be in action at Kentucky Wesleyan next Friday (Nov. 28) at 4:15.
Leading 9-7 at the 15:17 mark of the first half junior
Aaron Hayes made a nice move to get into the paint and score to up the Laker lead to 11-7 and sophomore forward
Trevin Alexander followed with a 3-pointer. Hayes hit two more from the charity stripe to complete the 7-0 run and up the lead to 16-7 at the 13:20 mark of the opening stanza. Sophomore
Luke Ryskamp hit a 3-pointer and pair of free throws to give GVSU a 23-10 lead with 8:34 left. Cedarville used a 14-4 run to close the gap as Marcus Reineke hit a pair of 3-pointers and converted three free throws when he was fouled on 3-point attempt.
Senior guard
Ryan Sabin scored on a nice driving layup, followed by a 3-pointer from junior guard
Darren Kapustka and two free throws from Ryskamp to give the Lakers a 34-24 lead. The team traded buckets over the final 1:53 and Grand Valley State went in at the half with a 36-28 advantage.
Cedarville cut the Laker lead to 38-33 early in the second half, but 3-pointer from Kapustka started a 12-2 GVSU scoring run that built a 50-35 advantage. Riccardo Carbajal led the way with six points in the run, while Sabin added a bucket and
Darren Washington converted a free throw. The Lakers maintained a double digit lead for the final 15:13 and led by as many as 18 points (70-52). Carbajal led the way with 12 points in the second half, while Kapustka chipped in eight points.Â
GVSU held a 46-28 rebounding advantage and outscored Cedarville 20-9 from the charity stripe. The Lakers also held a 28-12 advantage on points in the paint and the Laker reserves outscored the Cedarville reserves 26-12.Â
Carbajal led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Kapustka and Sabin each contributed 11 points. Ryskamp added 10 points and Alexander six in the scoring column.
Darren Washington pulled down a game-high nine bounds and Sabin chipped in seven caroms.Â
Reinecke led Cedarville with 24 points and hit five three-pointers.Â
