The #12 Grand Valley State volleyball team takes a nine-match winning streak on the road this weekend, as the Lakers look to stay undefeated both in conference play and in true road matches. GVSU has a challenging set of matches this weekend, as the Lakers face two of the top teams in the GLIAC's South Division, Hillsdale and Findlay.
Â
Since returning from the season-opening Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colo. in early September with a 2-2 record, Grand Valley State has not lost. The Lakers have rolled off nine consecutive victories, only two of which went longer than three sets. GVSU has swept its last four matches, all against South Division opponents. Overall, Grand Valley State is 11-2 this season and a perfect 9-0 in GLIAC play.
Â
This weekend, the Lakers have their toughest road swing, taking on two schools that are a combined 14-4 in league play. First up on Friday night is Hillsdale, who enters the weekend with a 7-6 overall record. The Chargers, however, are 6-3 in league play, sitting in a tie for second place in the South Division. HC had swept its first five GLIAC contests, but have hit a small rough patch in recent weeks. The Chargers have dropped three of their last four contests, albeit all four matches were on the road. Conversely, Hillsdale is a perfect 5-0 at home this season, having not dropped a set during that time.
Â
Sitting atop the South Division standings is GVSU's Saturday opponent, Findlay. Perhaps the early surprise of the 2014 season (Findlay was chosen to finish third in the preseason poll), the Oilers are 11-3 overall and own an 8-1 conference mark. They have followed a similar path to the Lakers, as UF started the year 3-2 and have won eight of its last nine matches. Findlay's lone GLIAC loss came in a 3-0 defeat at Hillsdale on Sept. 23. The Oilers survived five-set battles at Michigan Tech and Saginaw Valley State and are most recently coming off a 3-0 sweep at Wayne State last Saturday.
Â
Since dropping the opening set against Ferris State on Sept. 23, Grand Valley State has reeled off wins in 15 straight sets, culminating in 3-0 sweeps over Ohio Dominican, Tiffin, Lake Erie, and Ashland. The Lakers took down Ashland - the 2013 GLIAC Tournament runner-up and Midwest Regional semifinalist - in Allendale last Saturday in just 74 minutes.
Â
GVSU looks to keep up its strong play on the road this weekend, as the Lakers are 4-0 in true road matches, three of which are sweeps. The only undefeated team in the GLIAC, Grand Valley State has won at Wayne State, Saginaw Valley State, Ohio Dominican, and Tiffin.
Â
The team's upperclassmen are leading the way this season, ranking highly in several statistical categories. Senior libero Christina Canepa - fourth in career digs at GVSU - is fifth in the GLIAC in digs per set (4.91) and eighth in total digs (221). Classmate and starting setter, Kaitlyn Wolters, ranks fifth in the conference in assists per set (9.47) and sixth in total assists (426), while attacking at a blistering .432 percentage.
Â
Junior outside hitter Betsy Ronda is fifth in points per set (3.6), sixth in kills per set (2.95), and her 130 total kills are ninth most in the league. She is also 12th in the GLIAC in both digs (172) and digs per set (3.91).
Â
This weekend sets up next weekend's schedule at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament in Aurora, Ill. On Oct. 17-18, Grand Valley State will play three matches against teams from the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Match-ups will be determined after this weekend based on teams' conference records and rankings.
