Matches against Northern Michigan, Michigan Tech inside Fieldhouse Arena

#13 Grand Valley State picked up two impressive wins at least weekend's GLIAC-GLVC Crossover Tournament and the Lakers are back in Allendale this weekend (Oct. 24-25) for a pair of conference matches. GVSU hosts Northern Michigan on Friday night and takes on Michigan Tech on Saturday afternoon in the Fieldhouse Arena.

Friday night's 7:00 p.m. match against Northern Michigan is the team's 'Dig Pink' outing, which is designed to help support the fight against breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to show the support. The team's 4:00 p.m. contest against Michigan Tech on Saturday is 'Laker Blue Night', with GVSU fans being asked to support the Lakers by wearing blue to the match.

The Lakers had their 12-match win streak snapped with a loss to Missouri S&T last weekend, sandwiched between four-set victories over Lewis and Rockhurst, which were ranked fourth and second, respectively, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. GVSU has won 13 of its last 14 contests after starting the year with a 2-2 record at the Oredigger Classic in early September.

This weekend's home matches are the first since Grand Valley State swept Lake Erie and Ashland on Oct. 3-4 in Allendale. In fact, the Lakers have lost just one set at home this season (owning a perfect 5-0 record), which came in a 3-1 win over then-#14 Ferris State. GVSU has won 15 straight home GLIAC matches in the regular season, dating back to 2012.

After the team's 2-1 trip to the Crossover Tournament, the Lakers are 15-3 overall and an unblemished 11-0 in conference play. There are just other teams in the league with fewer than three GLIAC losses - Ferris State and Northern Michigan, both of which are 10-1 in the league.

GVSU's Friday opponent, Northern Michigan is 10-1 in conference play, yet are winless in nine non-conference matches. Overall, the Wildcats are 10-10. After running off victories in eight of its last nine GLIAC matches, Northern Michigan has dropped four in a row - including all three of its contests at the Crossover Tournament last weekend (against Rockhurst, Wisconsin-Parkside, and Lewis). In another oddity, NMU is 6-1 in true road matches, having only lost at Cedarville on Sept. 18. The Wildcats have lost just eight total sets in 11 conference outings.

Michigan Tech sits in the middle of the pack in the GLIAC, as the Huskies currently are in a three-way tie for seventh place in the league standings. Overall, MTU is 9-11 on the year and 6-5 in conference action. At the Crossover Tournament last weekend, Michigan Tech lost its meetings with Missouri S&T and Lewis before beating Wisconsin-Parkside in five sets. The Huskies have split their last six road matches, but more than half of the team's wins (five of nine) come in true road contests. Since a 1-4 start, Michigan Tech has posted a much better 8-7 record.

After this weekend, GVSU is on the road three times next week, starting with a matchup at Ferris State next Tuesday night (Oct. 28) and weekend matches at Northwood and Lake Superior State on Oct. 31-Nov.1.
