#12 Lakers Host Lake Erie, Ashland in Weekend Matches

GVSU looks to stay undefeated in conference play

Coming off a perfect 3-0 week, the #12 Grand Valley State volleyball team returns to Allendale to see if the Lakers can continue their winning ways. GVSU, which has won 17 of its last 18 matches inside the Fieldhouse Arena, welcomes Lake Erie and Ashland for a weekend set of matches.

In addition to that nearly unblemished home winning streak, Grand Valley State will look to keep up its current overall win streak. The Lakers have won seven straight contests, dropping just three total sets during that time. Overall, GVSU is 9-2 on the season and the only unbeaten team in conference play with a 7-0 GLIAC record. Grand Valley State has won its last 20 league matches.

Last week, the Lakers won nine straight sets to defeat #14 Ferris State at home and capture road wins over Ohio Dominican and Tiffin. Grand Valley State jumped from its #18 ranking in the AVCA poll last week to #12 in this week's ranks. It was the largest jump of any top-25 team and the highest in-season ranking for GVSU since Nov. 15, 2010, when the Lakers were also #12 in that poll.

With the two Ohio schools coming to Allendale this weekend, it brings up another surprising stat for Laker fans: Grand Valley State has not lost at home to an Ohio school since Sept. 23, 2005, when Findlay scored a 3-1 win over GVSU. Furthermore, Lake Erie and Ashland have never defeated the Lakers inside the Fieldhouse Arena.

Lake Erie's losing streak of seven matches is the exact opposite of Grand Valley State's seven-match win streak. The Storm started the year with a 2-3 record in non-conference matches, but have dropped all seven league contests. Overall, LEC is 2-10 with an 0-7 GLIAC mark. Lake Erie has lost four of those seven matches by 3-0 sweeps, only taking single sets against Michigan Tech, at Northwood, and at Lake Superior State.

After a rough 0-6 start, Ashland has played much better recently, winning four of its last five matches. The Eagles (4-7 overall, 4-3 GLIAC) swept those four wins, earning victories over Michigan Tech and on the road against Lake Erie, Lake Superior State, and Northwood. Saturday's contest will be a rematch of a pair of tight postseason battles from last year.

In the 2013 GLIAC Championship match in Allendale last November, the teams split the first four sets before GVSU captured the league tournament title with a thrilling 19-17 win in the fifth set. Grand Valley State was the top seed, while Ashland was seeded second. Two weeks later, GVSU won the final three sets (including a 33-31 marathon in set two) in the Midwest Region semifinals - also in Allendale - which ended AU's season. The 3-1 win sent Grand Valley State to the regional championship match.

After the home contests, Grand Valley State travels to take on Hillsdale and Findlay next weekend (Oct. 10-11). The Lakers are 4-0 on the road this season.
