Lakers Set To Host NMU And CSP In GLIAC Opening Weekend

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team begins GLIAC play this weekend, hosting Northern Michigan and Concordia-St. Paul. Friday's game against the Wildcats will be Alumni Day, then Sunday will be a Morgan's Message Dedication Game.

The Lakers earned their first victory of the season last Sunday, defeating Missouri Western State 9-6, after falling to Ashland on Friday in the home opener. GVSU moved to 1-7 on the year as they begin conference play this weekend. Maggie O'Niell picked up her first collegiate victory against the Griffons, recording eight saves. Tatumn Nyen was the league's Defensive Player of the Week after totaling four caused turnovers, four groundballs, and scored her first career goal. Ella Boose notched the 100th draw control of her career in the game against Ashland, while Delaney Smith and Emerson Holthouser each scored a hat trick in a game.
 
Northern Michigan is currently atop the GLIAC standings, starting the year 7-2. They started conference play last weekend, taking down SVSU 23-1. The Wildcats score over 14 goals per game, led by the nation's leading scorer in junior Jose Lakosky. The reigning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week, Lakosky leads the country in goals per game (5.22), points (65), and points per game (7.22). Her 47 goals are second nationally. Their defense also holds up as well, allowing only eight goals a contest, with goalkeeper Lauren Esposito posting a .492 save percentage.
 
 Concordia-St. Paul is also 1-0 in conference play, also defeating SVSU, winning 17-6. The Golden Bears are 4-5 to begin the season, having dropped four of their previous six games. CSP has two attackers with over 20 goals already this season, with Shelby Marik totaling 24 and Susie Monson scoring 21. Two goalies have split time in the cage this season, combining to record a .351 save percentage and nearly 13 goals allowed a game.
