#3 Lakers Travel to U.P. For Pair of GLIAC Games

ALLENDALE – The No. 3 Grand Valley State women's soccer team hits the road to the Upper Peninsula for a pair of GLIAC games. The Lakers will take on Northern Michigan on Friday (Sept. 26) at 1:00 PM in Marquette, Michigan and Michigan Tech on Sunday (Sept. 28) at 12:00 PM in Houghton, Michigan.

GVSU is coming off a win at Saginaw Valley State last weekend in the GLIAC opener. The Lakers defeated the Cardinals 2-0 to improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC. Alli French scored the game-winning goal in the sixth minute for her second of the season, while Sonya Mehta netted her first career goal as a Laker in the 61st minute. Defender Acadia Murphy was named the GLIAC defensive player of the week after playing all 90 minutes against Saginaw Valley State and playing a key role in the defense that held the Cardinals to zero shots on goal.
 
Sophomore Sarah Fromm leads GVSU with three goals and six points. Junior Alli French has netted two goals for four points on the season and leads GVSU with 14 shots with eight on target. Freshman Cora Conley leads the GLIAC with three assists. Junior Sonya Mehta and freshman Ivy Wilhelm each have notched a goal and assist for three points. Freshman goalkeeper Macie Hunter got the start for GVSU against Saginaw Valley State and posted her first collegiate individual shutout. 
 
This will be the 45th meeting between GVSU and Northern Michigan. The Lakers lead the all-time series 37-3-4. Northern Michigan enters the weekend with a 1-2-3 overall record and 1-1 GLIAC mark. The Wildcats opened up conference play with a 4-2 win at Roosevelt before falling at Parkside 2-1. The Wildcats have scored six goals this season from six different players. Freshman Addison Frantti scored the game-winning goal against Roosevelt and has added an assist on the season. Junior Jillian Thompson has made five starts in goal for the Wildcats making 17 saves. Freshman Carly Sides got the start last game and made eight saves in the loss to Parkside.
 
Michigan Tech enters the weekend with a 1-4-1 overall record with all four losses being at home. The Huskies are 1-0-1 in the GLIAC, defeating Roosevelt 3-1 and playing to a 1-1 draw to Parkside. Freshman Peyton Wetzel leads the Huskies with three goals for six points on eight shots. Junior Allison Millina has notched a goal and assist including the game-winning goal against Roosevelt. Senior Bri Barrows has started all six games for Michigan Tech and has made 36 saves.
