ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team tied Cedarville 2-2 but fell 4-3 in penalty kicks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Lakers finish the season with a 19-2-1 overall record.
Cedarville opened up the scoring in the 30
th minute off a free kick shot from just outside the top left of the box. The Yellow Jackets would double their lead two minutes later off another set piece that was kicked in by the back right post. Cedarville would take a 2-0 lead into halftime while also leading 6-2 in shots.
In the second half, GVSU cut the deficit in half in the 55
th minute off a header by
Kendall Aikens. Vesna Dennsion sent a cross from the right side for Aikens who was there in the middle of the box to header it in for her seventh goal of the season. The Lakers would find the equalizer 15 minutes later from
Mackenzie Ford. Off a corner kick sent in by
Sophia Morgan, Ford was there in the middle of the box for a header that snuck past the defender and goalkeeper at the bottom right corner of the goal to tie the game at two.
The game would go into overtime as the Lakers would outshoot Cedarville 3-1 in the two overtime periods, but the game would remain tied and would head into a penalty kick shootout. Cedarville would win 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the next round.
Vesna Dennison led GVSU with three shots and one assist.
Kendall Aikens and
Mackenzie Ford scored a goal off two shots. Ford appeared in all 110 minutes along with
Kacy Lauer,
Acadia Murphy, and Dennison.
