GVSU To Play Northern Michigan In Sunday's GLIAC Championship Game

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's lacrosse team goes for the GLIAC title sweep Sunday afternoon, taking on Northern Michigan in the tournament championship game. Already the regular season champs, the Lakers will try for their fifth straight tournament title as well.

GVSU got to Sunday's championship game with a 12-9 win over Davenport in the semifinals. The Lakers had to stage a comeback, trailing 4-0 after the first quarter, then again 9-8 late in the fourth quarter, before rallying for the win. Ella Boose, Jillian Bingman, and Gracie Bancroft all tallied hat tricks in the win. Kylie Waeghe recorded nine draw controls, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers. The Lakers won the draw control battle 18-7 and caused 16 Panther turnovers.
 
The Lakers took both matchups this season over the Wildcats, winning a nail-biter in Marquette, 12-11, then taking an 11-4 victory at home. In the two games, Kaylyn Cater and Sarah Krause combined to make 24 saves a post a collective .615 save percentage. Rothe scored eight total goals in the two games, while Kendra Swope scored five. This will be the third straight season the Lakers and Wildcats will meet for the GLIAC Championship game, with the Lakers taking both of the previous matchups.
 
Northern Michigan advanced to Sunday's game with a 9-7 win over Concordia-St. Paul. The Wildcats jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but saw the Golden Bears get within one at 8-7 early in the fourth quarter. NMU buckled down and held them off to secure the win. GLIAC Attacker of the Year Josie Lakosky tallied four points on a goal and three assists to bring her to a league-high 89 points. Lauren Esposito played all 60 minutes in goal, notching 13 saves and four groundballs. The Wildcats are looking for their first ever GLIAC Tournament title.
