Two Rivalry Games Coming Up For Women's Lacrosse

ALLENDALE, MICH. – Fresh off two GLIAC road wins, the GVSU women's lacrosse team gets set for two more league games this week. They start the week off Wednesday afternoon at Davenport, then finish with a home game versus SVSU on Friday. Friday will also be the team's Morgan's Message dedication game, as they will be partner with the organization to help athletes dealing with mental health issues.

The Lakers swept the opening weekend of GLIAC play, taking down Concordia-St. Paul 17-10 on Friday, then mounting a fourth quarter comeback to force overtime, where they defeated Northern Michigan12-11 on Sunday. They are now 7-3 overall and a perfect 2-0 in league play, the lone undefeated conference team. The Lakers were ranked 19th in the most recent IWLCA poll, the fourth team in the Midwest region to be ranked.
 
For the second straight week, GVSU also swept the GLIAC Player of the Week awards. Ashleigh Rothe was the offensive honoree and Kylie Waeghe earned defensive honors. In the two games, Rothe recorded 13 points on nine goals and four assists. She added six draw controls, three groundballs, and one caused turnover. Waeghe tallied four groundballs, two draw controls, and caused one turnover over two Laker victories.
 
Davenport is also winless in league play this season, falling to both CSP and NMU last weekend, but they went 5-2 in non-conference play to enter the matchup 5-4. Two Panthers have recorded over 20 goals this season, with both Blakely Malpass and Maddy Haynes both have 22 goals this season. Zoe Cassell and Rachel Livak have split time in net, both getting over 200 minutes in the cage. They have combined to make 60 saves and post a .420 save percentage. The Lakers have defeated Davenport all 16 times the two have met up in their teams' histories.
 
Saginaw Valley State is in their first season competing in women's lacrosse, entering this week 0-7. They have been outscored 142-27 this season, including 38-4 in their two GLIAC games. Freshman Gabby Parker has scored a team-high 10 goals this season, while Sarah Veale has tallied seven. Goalkeeper Mikaila Stone has played all 420 minutes in the cage, totaling 65 saves and a .314 save percentage.
