Cross Country Places First and Fourth, Freshman Will Engbers Finishes First at Jayhawk XC Invite

ALLENDALE, Mich. – First and fourth place finishes were claimed by Grand Valley State's men's and women's cross country teams at this morning's Jayhawk Invite hosted by Muskegon Community College. The men's squad tied for first, collecting six top-10 finishes for a team score of 30 points alongside Lansing Community College. The women landed fourth with 127 points behind Wayne State, Hope and Lake Superior State.
 
RESULTS
 
Freshman Will Engbers was named individual champion in the men's 8000m, crossing the finish line at a personal-best 25:13.1. Jacob Esser was the next Laker to cross the finish line, placing fifth at 25:29.0. Alex McArthur, Seppi Camilli, Zac Zemba and Isaac Staib rounded out the top 10 with a 7-8-9-10 finish. Both McArthur and Staib notched personal-best times at 25:35.4 and 25:38.2, respectively. Joey Rohmfeld (25:48.7), Ethan Parker (26:15.2), Brendan Chapple (26:20.6), Tyler Heath (26:27.2) and Adair Artis (26:48.3) also recorded personal-best times in Muskegon.
 
The women were led by true freshman Mackenzie Sellenraad, who recorded a lifetime-best 5k finish at 18:51.0 to place 16th overall. Sydney Roberts followed Sellenraad to place 19th, recording a 19:05.9 finish in her collegiate-debut. Another lifetime-best accompanied Grace Oberski who crossed the finish line 29th at 19:22.6. Chloe DeRidder (20:00.0) and Kamryn Lauinger (20:09.4) rounded out the women's lineup, finishing 47th and 52nd, respectively in their collegiate debuts.
 
Grand Valley State cross country will race one more time before the postseason begins. Several men and women will run next weekend at the Bradley Pink Invite in Peoria, Illinois.
