Women's Basketball adds Two more to 2024-25 Class

04.05.2024

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's basketball team added two more signees to their class of 2024 this spring, getting commitments from transfer Kathryn Schmidt and incoming freshman Emersen Berndt. Those two will join the five that signed earlier in the winter, to complete the seven-person class.

Kathryn Schmidt | Forward | 6-0 | Hampshire, Ill. | Lewis University
Kathryn Schmidt finished off a stellar four-year career at Lewis University this winter. Over her time there, she scored over 1,500 points and grabbed over 800 rebounds. Schmidt averaged double digits all four seasons, earning All-GLVC honors in all four years. She shot 43% from the floor and hit 34% from deep, while making 79% from the charity stripe. Over the last two years in Romeoville, Schmidt helped lead the Flyers to 44 wins and two trips to the Midwest Regional Tournament.

"Kathryn is a versatile player who can play multiple positions on the floor. She can stretch the defense by playing on the perimeter and she can post up on the block," stated head coach Mike Williams. "After a stellar four-year college career, Kat has the experience and maturity of a player who has competed in all situations. She will be a great addition to our Women's Basketball program."

Emersen Berndt | Guard | 5-9 | Grand Haven, Mich. | Grand Haven High School
Emersen Berndt averaged double figures in her two years on varsity, helping lead the Pirates to 31 wins in those years. She was the team MVP and leading scorer as a junior when she averaged 12 points and six rebounds. As a junior she was named All-Area and All-District honors as well.

"Emerson has been a great leader and a successful player for the last three years at Grand Haven High School," said Williams. "She is a versatile perimeter player with size, strength, and quickness.  She can play all 3 positions on the perimeter. She is a knockdown shooter and a solid ball handler."

"We are overjoyed to have both Kat and Emerson become a part of our Laker Family!"
