Behind A Stifling Defense, The Lakers Advanced To Saturday's National Championship

PITTSBURGH, PENN. – The Grand Valley State women's basketball team secured their spot in Saturday's National Championship game with a 61-39 victory over Alabama Huntsville in the Final Four. The Lakers will advance to their second straight National Championship game, and their third in program history.

Press Conference

The Lakers scored the first points of the game, getting a layup from MacKenzie Bisballe. UAH quickly tied the game, in what would be the story of the first quarter. Neither team could get in a rhythm offensively, and neither team led by more than three points. After the Chargers took a 13-12 lead, Paige VanStee hit a layup to put the Lakers up by one to end the first quarter.

Four straight Laker points to begin the second period forced a Charger timeout, trailing by five. UAH managed to come back and tie the game at 21, but the Lakers went on an 8-1 run to finish the half, ending with a VanStee buzzer-beater, putting them up 29-21 at the half.

Once again, GVSU scored four quick points to open a quarter, once again forcing a Charger timeout, this time leading 33-22. Huntsville was able to get back within six points at the 4:21 mark, until a 9-1 Laker run to end the quarter made the score 47-33 after 30 minutes.

GVSU kept increasing their lead, getting it up to 20 points following a triple from Molly Anderson and a layup from Ava Scanlon, giving the Lakers a 55-35 advantage. Huntsville managed only six points in the entire fourth quarter, getting held below 40 points for the firs time all season.

Paige VanStee scored a game-high 21 points, adding six rebounds in the process. Nicole Kamin scored 13 points, while pulling down nine boards. MacKenzie Bisballe had 13 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, while Ava Scanlon recorded nine boards and seven points. The Lakers dominated on the glass, pulling down 64 rebounds, compared to 28 from UAH.
