AUGUSTA, MICH. – The GVSU men's golf team put themselves in position to repeat as GLIAC Champions, as they advanced to Sunday's matchplay championships against Ferris State. The Lakers won the stroke play portion of the tournament, then as the top-seed in the semifinals, they took down SVSU 3-1-1 to advance.
Bryce Wheeler used a great second round to jump into the lead and earn the GLIAC Individual medalist.
Results
In the stroke play, the Lakers shot a second round of 275 (-9) to finish at -11, 26 strokes up on second place. In second was Wayne State, followed by Ferris State and then Saginaw Valley State in fourth. All four teams qualified and moved on the matchplay semifinals later that afternoon.
Wheeler carded a round of 65 (-6), with six birdies to end at -4 and claim the individual crown. Just behind him in a tie for second were
Drew Coble and
Manuel Cue Vargas. Coble shot a round of 69 (-2) with four birdies, and Vargas shot a 70 (-1), also sinking four birdies.
Nick Krueger was fourth at one under after his round of 72 (+1) with three birdies. Rounding out the top five was another Laker, as
Charlie Cooley ended at one over. He shot a round of even-par 71 with four birdies.
In the semifinals against the Cardinals, the Lakers started strong then held off a late SVSU charge to take it 3-1-1. Winning their matches for the Lakers were Krueger, Wheeler, and Coble. Krueger won by seven strokes, as he shot a round of 70. Wheeler also had a round of 70, winning by two strokes. Coble had the low round of 67 to win by three. Cooley tied his round, as both players shot a 73. Vargas carded a 71 but fell by one stroke.
The Lakers take on Ferris State tomorrow for the GLIAC Championships. The two teams will play one round of matchplay to determine the conference winner.
