Lakers Fall 7-4 to Minnesota Duluth in Extras; Game Two Forfeited in Fourth Inning

Box Score 1 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The No. 5 Grand Valley State ended their spring break trip at the Spring games today (Mar. 9) in Florida. The Lakers lost 7-4 to Minnesota Duluth in nine innings and ended the trip with a forfeit win against Indiana (Pa.) and are now 16-5 on the season.
 
Minnesota Duluth opened up the scoring in the first inning with two runs on a bases loaded walk and sacrifice fly to center field. The Lakers got on the board in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Kelsey Komorous singled to left field driving home Hannah Hollister
 
Minnesota Duluth regained a two-run lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single. GVSU cut the deficit back to one in the sixth inning off an RBI by Jenna Ballard, scoring Morgan Spicer. The Lakers would tie the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning off a sacrifice fly by Hollister to bring home Megan Koenigshof, send the game into extra innings. 
 
In the 8th inning, Minnesota Duluth scored the go-ahead run with two outs on a nRBI singe lto right center. With two outs in the bottom of the 8th, MaryJane Goodman singled up the middle to tie the game at four, bringing home Komorous. The Bulldgos would score three in the 9th inning and would hang on for the 3-run win. 
 
Kelsey Komorous went 2-4 with a run scored and RBI. Hannah Hollister recorded a hit with a run scored and RBI. Morgan Spicer added a hit and run scored. Jenna Ballard and MaryJane Goodman each added a run batted in. Ashley Platek started in the circle and suffered the loss (3-3) after tossing all nine innings allowing five earned runs with five strikeouts.
 
The Lakers second game ended in a win by forfeit by Indiana (Pa.) due to an injury in the fourth inning. GVSU will return home and will not play next week. The Lakers will return to the diamond for the start of GLIAC play on Saturday, March 23rd when they travel to face Parkside. The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 PM in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
